Avast free can't update

Hello. About 20 minutes ago i got a pop-up from avast and windows notifications that my AV is outdated and i should immediately update it. I opened GUI and i see my virus definition says it’s outdated, when i click to check for updates it does nothing. Quickly checks for updates and goes back to red notification that my version is outdated. It worked fine before, i did nothing before, no AV update or anything else. Any advices?

Repair Avast:

  1. Avast GUI → Settings → Troubleshooting
  2. Click on ‘REPAIR APP’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

I’m using older avast version (20.1.2397), because i like it better. Will “repairing” do an auto update of it?

I also found out this problem, so I repaired Avast as described and it works very well now. Many thanks.

You also had the pop-up from AV and/or windows about your outdated virus definition and manually updating it didn’t worked?

Yes of course. Manual updating didn’t work, so I first thought it was a problem of my old release of the program (september 2019). I updated to the current one (October 7 2020), but this didn’t solve the issue. I tried the described repairing procedure; it took just a few minutes ; then Avast turned back protected again and the red alert message disappeared.

Erm, why would you want to stay on an outdated version…!? ???

You’re welcome.

Older version works smoother on my OS, that’s the reason why i stayed on it. So will “repairing” update my AV to newer version?

Update to the latest version (20.8.2432): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=238421.0
There won’t be any troubleshooting available for outdated versions, like 20.1 and similar.

I updated to latest version as you suggested, did a ‘repair’ and the error is gone. Thank you.

You’re welcome.
