Does AVAST Free Antivirus use a Proxy and if so, can I disable it and still be protected? I also use OPENDNS for some extra filtering services and it is reporting a conflict with my DNS IP and HTTP IP. My local ISP says it doesn’t have me behind a proxy, and I’ve made sure my computer is clean from malware etc. the OPENDNS support folks think it might be from one of the AVAST components. -r
It’s definitely an issue between Avast and OPENDNS - I disabled all 5 shields in Avast temporarily. The DNS conflict in OPENDNS went away and their filtering kicked in. Once I turned all 5 Avast shields back on, I got the conflict.
Apparently Avast does some of its own DNS traffic routing. Can I turn that off in Avast and still be protected?
Avast does not have any DNS proxy in Free version. However, it has a network filtering driver, that provides data into webshield. Can you please elaborate what is the product from OpenDns that you have troubles with? I assume that simple configuration change to Opendns DNS servers works ok.
I’m just using OpenDNS Update 2.2.1 their standard free tool and it keeps saying I have a conflict between my DNS IP and my HTTP IP. It goes away when I turn off all 5 shields in AVast (free), though I don’t know which one of those 5 would be causing it.
I added OpenDNS’s DNS Service IP numbers to my connection and that didn’t help. The only way the problem goes away is when I turn off the shields in Avast.
OpenDNS told me to try disabling the Secure DNS feature, but I can’t find it in mine. Supposedly it’s under Settings → Active Protection, but I can’t find that setting. Is it in another location? I’m running the very latest updated version of Avast Free.
In that case, Real Site, which is just another name for SecureDNS, is not running for you. If you’ll send me steps to reproduce, we can try it here in Avast with OpenVPN tomorrow. Lukas
