Avast Free falling down on the job!

I could have sworn I posted this before, but I don’t see it, so either I messed up, or it was deleted for some reason.

Yesterday, I downloaded the 32-bit file from;

notepad2.com

I thought it was a legitimate site, but it turned out to be a scam site. After I downloaded the file, I scanned it with Avast and it said it was clean, so I ran it. Instead of a stand-alone, portable program as promised, it started an installer that tried to connect to the net. My firewall blocked it. Apparently it’s “InstallCore”. Afterwards, some weird things happened, which aren’t relevant to this post.

I uploaded the file to VirusTotal and their version of Avast detected it as a threat. Yes, I had the site re-scan it. In fact, here’s the latest scan;

https://www.virustotal.com/#/file-analysis/NjM1YmJlYTU5ZDY0MzNjZmZiZDNkMWMzMzVhMWQ4NTM6MTUzNzkwMjgzMw==

Even with PUP detection and analyze whole file checked, Avast still thinks this file is A-OK. When I go to Update in Avast, it claims that I have the latest version, 18.1.2326.

So why is the version of Avast on the VirusTotal website better at detecting threats than my local copy? If it had warned me the file was a PUP, I never would have run it.

I deleted it since you already have a topic where this is posted, no need to create a new

Well, that one was asking about a possible infection. I created this one to point out to the devs that my copy of Avast doesn’t seem to be doing its job.

Well obviously that’s not the latest version. Latest 18.6.2349
So if I’m understanding correctly, you have an Avast installation that you checked (within the program)to update and it’s showing 18.1.2326 as latest version then it seems very likely you need to ditch(uninstall present Avast installation via Add/Remove Programs ) then run the Avastclear.exe tool (https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and install the latest freshly downloaded version of Avast.https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=221320.0
If what you posted isn’t a typo then clearly thats not the latest version and the present installation is corrupted.

Edit:
It would be prudent, given your issues to have our experts check it out. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=194892.0
