Avast Free for Windows Vista

I have an old laptop running Windows Vista which isn’t actively used and hasn’t been for several years. But it has some files that want to keep so I will be going through those methodically over the next few weeks. This laptop had Avast Free antivirus installed and of course Avast understandably complained of being out of date and with an expired license. Although Avast offered to automatically update the license that process failed. So I thought that I would just uninstall the old version and install the current version specifically intended to be run on Windows Vista. See link below.

However, this version will not install on Vista; it returns an error saying that it requires Windows 7 or higher. Your sister company AVG offers a Vista specific installer too but that one also fails to install, citing a Windows 7 or above operating system requirement.

Is there a version of Avast that will actually install and run on Windows Vista?

Try using links from here: maybe offline installer is preferred.

You need Avast 18.5, which was the last version for XP/Vista.
Filepuma no linger lists that file.
@bob3160 has a copy of XP version that he shares. See this post for link: End of support for Windows XP/Vista - #283 by bob3160

Note that it may show as “you are unprotected” as the free licence expires (but should not do that). The virus defs seem to update OK but Avast have warned they do no testing on XP anymore. Ref: End of support for Windows XP/Vista - #317 by lukas.hasik
