Not sure when but think is was 7/25/15, whenever the last Avast Free update 10.3.2223 installed. A few days later I noticed I could not restart or shut down my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC. Hung at the shutting down window. Had to manually reboot. Uninstalled Avast Free and restart worked. Reinstalled Avast Free and restart didn’t work Uninstalled Avast Free 10.3.2223 and installed MSE till this issue is resolved. All worked properly with MSE x64 installed.
Update to the latest version (10.3.2225): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=174286.0
sure glad I found this. For the past three days I have been struggling with two Win 7 64bit machines that would not shut down. Today I accepted AVAST latest update (don’t remember the version) and NOW my Win 7 Ultimate 64bit will not shut down. So I figured since that is the only thing I had changed in the last day I uninstalled AVAST and lo and behold I am able to shut down again. Went back to the other Win7 64 bit machines and also uninstalled AVAST and we are all now able to shut down again!!!
I am going with free MS Essentials
I might also point out that went I went to the restore control panel on all three of these PCs thinking I could restore to an earlier day - ALL THREE had the restore with either a RED X or with no points saved. On my daughter’s machine I had worked a couple of hours yesterday to try and fix the restore error and eveytime we had to force the shut down the restore points were wiped out.
AFTER AVAST is uninstalled the restore center returns to normalcy.
