Avast Free Shuts Off After 4 Seconds

This started happening a few days ago: every time I try to start Avast Free Antivirus it shuts off after approx. 4 seconds. Then it immediately restarts and shuts off again. After a couple of tries it doesn’t automatically restart anymore. However, when I try to start it again the process repeats itself. Running on Windows 7 64 bit.

I uninstalled with avastclear in Safe Mode and downloaded and re-installed the newest version (18.4.2338) several times to no avail.

Was able to run Avast in Safe Mode with Command Prompt and the scan came up clean.

Windows Action Center indicates that Avast is on and running, both Virus Protection and Spyware And Unwanted Software Protection is On.

Windows Defender is disabled.

Windows Task Manager shows “AvastSVC.exe *32” process running, as well as “AvastBrowserCrashHandler.exe *32” and “AvastBrowserCrashHandler64.exe”

  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

No other security related software installed.

I’ve always used Avast, the only thing installed on my computer since I got it about a year ago. Machine had Windows Defender pre-installed, but I disabled that when I installed Avast.
