avast!free won’t turn on; error msg is “failed to init aswData.dll” followed by error msg “Instr at 0x0139952c” ; using Windows7.
Avast!free was running but my computer was suddenly crashed and Windows then rebooted but with Avast! error messages stated above.
thanks for any help on this; Kaspersky trial version was running at the time, but i have since deleted this

Well a second AV installed can have many consequences.
You say that you have deleted kaspersky, I take it you mean uninstalled it ?
- Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.
If after that you are still getting an avast error - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.
Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.
Thanks, but there is no “repair” option only Uninstall/change; so i can’t change the settings; also, i don’t have an Avast! tray icon now so i can’t access is to eliminate the self defense feature.
any other thoughts;

The Uninstall/Change (same as Change/Remove) is the first step to getting to the avast interface.
Thanks,
I had to uninstall in Windows Safe Mode using the aswclear program from Avast! this worked and i just downloaded the Avast!free again and it works ok now.
