Hi. I have a problem while performing a standard scan (with archive scan)…the process freezes up at a certain point (while scanning the folder winsxs…onex.mof). The quick scan completes without a glitch. I have also tried the boot scan, but caused the blue screen to appear, with some start up repair thereafter. My other computer, a desktop, runs avast without any problems and even completes a thorough scan.
Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.
Thorough is also by its design very thorough and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate.
The boot-time scan has a blue background (see image) or are you saying BSOD ?
If so did you gather any information from it, e.g. the Stop error code number.
Yup, what I meant was that after it froze (in the middle of the boot scan), what I got after restarting my PC was the blue screen, with a notice that WINDOWS failed to start, so they did Startup Repair. However after the long process, the computer wasn’t able to find the specific problem and I was able to start Windows normally without any problems.
There was no stop error code number given.
I’ve done the standard scan a couple more times (not the boot scan though), and the same thing happens…every time it gets to the part where it scans the above file/program it stops. Then a few minutes later even the pointer ceases to move. Even if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del it won’t work, and I would have to turn the computer off by pressing the power off button.
I also did scans by specifying the folders, and I was able to complete all scans except the windows/winsxs folder, which contains the file. It freezes when it starts scanning the following:
“C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-onex.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_en-us_5a8b25a54489f6fb”;“C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-onex_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_a39459f120708f7e”;“C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-onex.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_en-us_5cc1e7a1417507cf”;“C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-onex_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_a5cb1bed1d5ba052”
That’s rather strange… could be a problem with the disk as well.
I’d probably try running a disk check on the system drive, including the surface check.
You need to disable the automatic restart to see the error or you can dig a little into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.
There was no report…just some error reports about improper shutdown, but there was no report immediately before this log on improper shutdown (this presumably occurred because I pressed the power off button when the screen froze).
Anyway, can I delete the onex.mof file? My Comodo firewall also hangs when it scans that part. And when I access the folder from windows explorer the computer also hangs (so I guess this is a problem with that file/folder, not with Avast).
Yes, there really seems to be something wrong with the folder.
My guess is that either the filesystem structure is corrupted, or there’s a bad block on the disk.
I wouldn’t do that.
Run a disk check and try to repair the errors.
I’d recommend to backup any valuable data first (elsewhere, not on the same disk), because sometimes checkdisk can do more harm than good… just in case.
Hi we are having the same problem on my sons computer. He plays WOW online, yesterday, after Avast updated def., a screen popped up with a virus alert C:world of Warcraft\scan.dll file WIN32:TROJAN-GEN. He deleted it and continued to play the game. Later he left the game and when he went back to it he got the same alert again. Sent it to the virus chest. The attempted to do a through scan. It hung up when it reached MSOCACH…409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383c9\YL561409.cab
And had to shut down by turning off the power. Tried through scan again same result as above. Tried fast scan and this time it completed the scan. We then googled WOW\scan.DLL file and found that several people who also played WOW and were using AVAST had the same problem after the update. It turns out that this file is needed for the game and is not a virus.
This morning we uninstalled Avast and reinstalled it. When we ran the boot scan after install it once again hung up on the above and had to once again turn off the power. Tried Google the above file but couldn’t find anything.
Any ideas Thanks George
Thanks. I did the check disk, it found a bunch of errors in the indexes (Stage 2/5) then froze somewhere in Stage 4/5…so I restarted (by pressing the power off button), then the chkdsk went by smoothly. Haven’t tried scanning with avast again yet.
Did the avast scan, standard, no archive scan, and it froze again. Did a check disk, hanged in Stage 4 (13%…), had to do a hard power off. The error log did not record anything. What to do next?
Btw, have just been using this laptop for 3 months now.
