I use avast boot scan very often and would completed and resume back to window. Today I have the problem that the boot scan freezes on the same file (window font msgothic.ttc) every boot scan I did (about 4 scan). I have to press ESC to get back to window. First I thought could it be a virus or malware.I scanned the whole computer and the folder that contain this file using avast and malwarebyte, but nothing was found. I reinstalled Avast and the same problem occur. To found out what could have caused this issue, I reinstalled a fresh copy of window xp on my computer with no update and no internet connection for now). I installed just Avast free edition on the computer (program version 7.01474 virus definition 121217-0 and did a boot scan on the system. The scan went well and back to normal window. Next I connect the computer to the internet and update avast to the latest virus definition 130121-0 (same program verison) and re-boot scan again. The same problem appear. I decide to delete file (msgothic.ttc) to see if this may work, but after deleting and rescanning, the boot scan freeze at a different font file. To double check, I uninstalled Avast and reinstalled a different antivirus to check for virus on the computer-nothing was found. I then reinstalled back Avast after uninstalled the other one. Is there a bug in the virus update that caused this problem or is it something else - malware, rootkit??. It is such a shame that I cannot use the boot scan as this is the one of the best feature of the program. I would be grateful if there is a solution to this. My computer is an ACER laptop with window xp service pack 2 and then 3- same problem after update window.
Error code when you try to update TrueType fonts on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 -based computer: "1224:ERROR_USER_MAPPED_FILE
Thanks. I tried it but with no success-still won’t go through the boots scan. I deleted the font, but the boots scan stuck on another font. I scanned a few time random font get freeze up at different scan. What is going on??. There is also a error message File C/WINDOWS/SYSTEM\RCDSETUP.exel %SYS/OCXSETUP.WS4 ERROR 42145 (INSTALLER ARCHIVE CORRUPTED). This message has been showing on the boot scan even when the boot scan is working perfectly. I don’t think this could have caused the hung up.

You’re not the only one having this problem. It started on my WinXP machine sometime after January 14. Ever since then my system hangs during an Avast boot scan when it reaches the C:\WINDOWS\FONTS folder and comes to the first really large file (BATANG.TTC at 16,258,580 bytes). If I remove that file the scan hangs on the next large file (GULIM.TTC at 13,518,660 bytes). The process continues until I’ve removed the following files:
BATANG.TTC
GULIM.TTC
MINGLIU.TTC
MSGOTHIC.TTC
MSMINCHO.TTC
SIMHEI.TTF
SIMSUN.TTC
Each of these is well over 1 MB in size. Scanning the same folder with both Avast and Malwarebytes after the system is up and running shows no problems. The system only hangs during a boot scan. Not only does the system hang but the hard drive light continues to flicker as though the scan is still running. Strange.
I’ve solved this temporarily by removing the above files (any FONT file > 1 MB) and storing them elsewhere until things return to normal.
It didn’t really hang, just took a long time to process.
Anyway, should be fixed by now.
Works fine now. Thank you for the assistance.
