Avast freezes/lags my google chrome

Hello. Since yesterday Avast AV started to make my Google Chrome lag/freeze when i do things on it, no matter what. For example when i go to YouTube and try to choose a video from main page, whole browser freezes for a few seconds, 2-4. When the video finally gets launched and i want, for example, to change it’s quality by clicking the ‘gear’ option, it also freezes for few seconds. Same when i search for something on google. Happens with many things i do on Chrome. When i disable every Avast shield, everything is back to normal, no freezes, no lags, everything works fast as before. It started happening yesterday after i restarted my PC, before that everything was working fine. My AV was outdated since 2-3 months, so i updated it to newest version, but it didn’t solve the problem. Anyone could give me some advice about it? It really bothers me.

Edit:
I did “repair”, but it didn’t solve the problem.

I also did check again which protection causes it and it looks like only “Web shield” is causing these freezes. When i turn it off, freezes are gone, but with it enabled i have them.

Edit 2:
Seems like disabling “QUIC/HTTP3” scanning gets rid of the problem in “Web shield” column in settings.

I’ve reported this to the developers let’s see if that gets us an answer.
I’m not having that problem.

I have the same issue! Entire day!

Yesterday there was an update for Avast. It required restart. I just turned off my PC.
Today when I turned it on and started browsing I could immediately feel everything was sluggish and there were often computer hangs.

Some hangs last for few seconds.

Of course I was in panic mode and started to check everything. Because this is unacceptable.
After few hours of troubleshooting everything I found it. It is Avast Web Shield!

It happens when I try to load some pages or when I try to interact on some of the pages.
It happened even when I tried to register on this forum! 5 seconds complete computer hang.

What to do!?
I am aware Web Shield is the most important module and just disabling it will bring more issues.

If I disable QUIC/HTTP3 scans, I guess I need to disable those protocols in Chrome too, right?

Please fix! I would hate if I need to find different AV solution because of this.

Any news?

I didn’t touch anything in Chrome settings, i only disabled QUIC/HTTP3 scanner in Avast in “Web shield” column and it solved the problem with freezes. Yet still i wouldn’t like to have it disabled, so i’m waiting for the solution/fix for it as well.

Hi, could you send us a support package?

[ol]- Enable debug logging in Avast (check Settings->General->Troubleshooting->Enable debug logging) and restart (disable and enable) Web Shield in (Protection->Core Shields->Web Shield)

For now, disabling QUIC/HTTP3 scanning solves problem. We are working on fix.
Thank you for you cooperation.

One more question - do this freezes occur only on google sites - google.com, youtube.com, etc. , or on other non-google domains too?

It happened to me also on Facebook. I didn’t check more non-google sites.

Mine are happening all over the place.

https://forum.avast.com/ - when I was opening new account

https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ - when I try to paste any address to test there (massive lag/hang)

Twitch.tv - whenever I try to open new stream

Google Docs and Sheet - big lag whenever I try to open new document.

And ALL of the issues disappear as soon as I disable Web Shield!

I would say generally every page is a potential hang at one place/time.

Browsing is a pain entire day today. But I’m happy I have managed to pinpoint the issue, it was very frustrating in the begining.

I noticed that when I unchecked QUIC/HTTP3 scanning that it increased
the speed of reaching all websites.
My question is what protection am I losing by doing this?

Hi there,

I’m having exactly the same issue with google chrome, just started happening today. It will be working fine one minute, then a random freeze/lag for no reason when accessing a website or typing something in the search bar. Only seems to be happening to chrome, otherwise the system feels responsive for other applications and IE seems to work ok as well.

Opening Gmail completely killed my system. Everything was frozen. Only thing I could do is hard reset.

After restart I tried it with Web Shield off. No issue at all.

Then I turned Web Shield on, refreshed and system froze again :frowning:

It also happens in Microsoft Edge (Chromium version). Google, Microsoft, and Facebook sites are affected. Yahoo sites not affected. Internet Explorer 11 isn’t affected.

It seems disabling QUIC/HTTP3 scanning inside Webshield resolves this issue.

Hi guys, if you’re willing to help, see Reply #4 from Michal.

PS: Just for the record, no issues with Firefox here.

File ID of my PC is 20210108_1327_5ZPD8_4273955891.zip

Can anybody with problem try to open problematic site in chrome, press F12 to open console, and then right click on reload button (in top left corner of browser ) and select “empty cache and hard reload”. After this, does problem persists?

Next thing would help us is to check, if some resource in loading to website using QUIC does this freezes. Steps:

  1. Open console - press F12, press F5 to reload
  2. Select network tab in console.
  3. In table with loaded resources, add new column - Protocol (right click on column name, click “Protocol”)
  4. In address bar type problematic site and hit enter
  5. See console, if any resource is loading too long, or didn’t load. Screenshot would be helpful.

Thank in advance for you cooperation.

Hello Michal Z.

I have created a support package using the avast support tool as per the instructions in your first post.

The File ID is: CNCFF

I will follow the instructions in your new post and reply back later.
Thanks, Elliot.

Hello again,

Unfortunately the console doesn’t show anything most of the time even when it freezes/hangs.
I’ve attached a screenshot of the console when trying to access www.youtube.com if it helps.

Thanks, Elliot.

good evening, same problem on facebook freeze

I also have the same problem. Chrome unable to open any website, Opera is working but slowly. I disabled QUIC/HTTP3 scanning in webshield as suggested in this topic and its back to normal.

Hi all, we working on fix, but we need logs from chrome when problems happen.

  1. Enable QUIC/HTTP3 scanning in Avast
  2. Close all chrome windows
  3. Open command line - press Windows+r, type cmd and press enter
  4. Copy this command to command line and press enter.
"c:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --incognito --enable-logging --v=1 --log-net-log=%userprofile%\chrome-log_%random%.json https://www.youtube.com

It opens chrome in incognito mode and loads youtube.
5) Close chrome and copy console output to file.
6) Find all chrome-log_XXXX.json in your home directory and share it (with console output) to us via google drive - send me message with link, or send it to us according to https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/160 - send me message with archive name.
7) Disable QUIC/HTTP3 scanning in Avast

If problem did not happen, try different website in command, or remove --incognito parameter.

Thank you in advance for cooperation.
