Avast! freezes up after running a scan

Recently after running a scan the final Avast! screen freezes up and will not let me close it. I must then shut down and restart my computer to continue using the computer. Can I fix this? I’m no computer genius.

Thanks,

Erik

How exactly does it freeze? Does it happen always approximately at the same place/folder of the scan (at the end)?
Do you see a hard disk activity (when it freezes)? Is only the program frozen, or the whole computer (possibly with mouse cursor)?

Additionally, you can go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, you can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report).

After avast! disappears, check the end of the report file - the “troublesome” file is likely to be close to the end (close in the sense that this particular file will probably not be written in the report, but the previous one will be the last line, so it shouldn’t be hard to guess). We would certainly like to have this file - if it really causes problems to avast! - so that we could fix the problem.

The report file created (if you turned it on in program settings) will be (default location) at \Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt

The scan finishes. Then the avast! screen seems to freeze and will not let me close it. I can access my email and IE but they are overlayed on top of the avast! screen. If I use ctrl alt del to to shut down and restart my computer, I can see that it needs to close the avast! program before the computer will shut off.

Can you check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

How would I check that folder? ???

Sorry,

Erik

Where you’ve installed avast…
With Windows Explorer you can go there…

If you allowed the program to install to it’s default program, you’ll find the information here:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log

I’m sure I allowed it to install in the default as I would not know how to install it anywhere else. How would I access that file?

I am unable to access the finished scans log file as that screen is frozen upon completion of the scan.

Thanks again,

Erik

Go there with Windows Explorer and double click it (will open Notepad).
Or start Notepad and open that particular file.

Don’t you have a report here?
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt

It isn’t quite the same but very similar to a problem I reported the other day, for which I received similar replies from the team.

I will let you know when I have tried again. Erik0 how long did your scan take - was it longer than usual?

I don’t think my scan took any longer than normal. I’ve sent what I think is my log report to tech. We’ll see what they say.

Erik

Erik, you won’t be able to send to me. My email is not disclosed.
But you should have sent to support (at) avast.com

Sorry, I thought you/they were the same. Resent to support. I had sent to VLK.
