Avast! Home vs Norton Security Scan

I notice Google pack lets one down load Norton Security Scan. It is a free, easy-to-use tool that scans your PC for viruses, spyware, and other threats.

How does this compare with Avast? Can Avast and Norton Security Scan reside and work together?

I would like to have opinion of members before installing Norton Security Scan.

I personally wouldn’t have any Symantec/Norton AV or Security Scan installed on my system with avast or any other AV. In the past Norton has been notorious for being difficult to remove, whilst this may not be anything like prior I still wouldn’t have it.

There are plenty of on-line scanners that provide a secondary scan capability without being installed on your system. On-line Virus Scanners and other useful Links Security-Ops.eu.tt New on-line scanner http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

I also suggest you do a forum search for Norton Security Scan as I believe this has been discussed previously.

It’s only on-demand and I can’t really compare because it found nothing that avast missed on my computer.

No problems. I have it.

Security Scan may find threats but it gives you no way to remove them. It’s simply a tool to try and convince you to buy their full products.

On another note, I’ve used Norton products and never had any problems. I never had any trouble removing them either.

I on the other hand have seemed to notice that the performance of my PCs decreased after installing any Norton’s/Symantec product. Avast has been very good for me in that respect. I will admit that some of my hardware is far from state of the art. I am a Linux user primarily and my OS of choice requires a lot less systems resources than running Windows.

I currently have 3 machines running XP Pro (2 desktops & 1 laptop) and one those is a PIII 1 Ghz box with only 512MB of RAM. Runs Linux pretty good and XP decent. I also have two laptops running Windows 7. My ISP decided to change the free security software that they made available for their subscribers to Symantec/Norton’s. I notticed enough problems on each PC after installing that option make to the decision to find another alternative. That’s what lead me to Avast.

Good choice. Better choice. Best choice.
