Avast is better of Antivir PE?

In some newsgroup I have read that Avast is very powerfull but Antivir PE has a more high detection rate… is true? I have tried Antiv PE and I have see that is very fast, but Ican’t try the detection rate.
I have see that Avast Pro have the june Virus Bulletin certificate!! GOOD! But the home version is certified?

If avast! Pro gets an award, the same goes for Home Edition.
Core engines are identical, extra features and Script Blocker are different.
But they don’t test Script Blocker in such tests,so results should be identical for both editions.

Wonderful!

AntiVir has a small edge over avast! with heuristics and daily updates, but as far as i know it doesn’t support nearly as much packers as avast! (so they have to make more signatures for same file which is repacked) …

Antivir don’t support packed files? :o And if a virii is into a zip file?!

No,not archives,i meant runtime packers (UPX,ASPack,PE_Compact,MEW…)

And if Antivir encounter a packed files as that… what is the result?

AntiVir has a small edge over avast! with heuristics? According to the last Clementi’s retrospective tests, it’s not so hot.
IMHO heuristics without strong unpacking is useless as 95+ % of today’s malware is packed.

BTW RejZoR ask Mike over at malware-research forum what he think’s about AntiVir and (especially) their heuristics - he used to work for them

Yeah,i know heuristics are useless without unpackers. But macro heuristics don’t need any unpacking capabilities (except to unpack Word/Excel document). It also shows some good results on non packed files and some basic packed. But thats pretty much all. Yeah i have seen latest tests at Malware Research. I probably can’t tell anything about results for now… they should be up tomorrow anyway…

What is the web site of Malware Research?

Malware Research is not public forum. It’s for closed group of AV developers and other experts and advanced users in this field.

Thanks for the reply, My final conclusion is that avast is a good product…

It sure is,and it’s getting better and better ;D

Did anyone check AntiVir’s server? Cause right now it’s taking like 6 minutes to download the update. Not including connect to the server, that take 2 minutes more. :-\

Yeah, thats huge AntiVir downside (along with compeltely manual updates).
avast! has no competition in updating area(even with commercial products),thats for sure.

Normally it would take 10-15 seconds to get and install the updates from AntiVir, today I don’t know what the heck their server has been up to but it took nearly 7 minutes.

Nevermind, they fix their server already. But unlike avast! Anti Vir doesn’t have automatic updates. Yet still theres a program for AntiVir software updates that takes 1,668 K of my RAM while avast! update software takes only 768 K of RAM. ::slight_smile:

The only advantage i see in AntiVir is it uses less resources. Although Avast offer more features for its resources. ( Don’t know why Avast VM size is huge )

So apart from that I think Avast wins hands down.

Forget VM Size. Even if it’s high,HDD space is cheap and nearly unlimited (for programs usage).
