Avast is blocking internet access - HELP

Everything was fine yesterday, but today, I have to disable Avast shields to be able to access the internet from both IE8 and Firefox. I forced updates from the control panel but still nothing. As soon as I turn on the shields, all internet access stops!

Using v5.0.545

ETA: I have also un-installed and re-installed a fresh copy with no fix. I tried disabling the shields one at a time and found that it will work if I keep web shield off.

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Just tried repairing and still no luck. The only way I can access internet is by turning the web shield off.

Sorry… but can you test an installation from the scratch?
Did you have any other antivirus/firewall before avast?
In your signature you say Windows ME and IE6 ???

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Tried that from another post and still no luck. I have been running Avast for several years. Running v5.x for several months

My sig is old…I am now running Windows XP Pro sp3 with IE8 and/or Firefox

Any chance this could be a bad update that rolled out over night? I have 3 pc’s on my network and 2 that stay on all night are affected but 1 that was off is working fine.

Who knows… updates are weird in some computers.

You may want to go to Account Related Settings select Hide email address from public? to prevent scammers and spammers harvesting your msn.com email address.

Current update is 100527-0 on my systems.

How much RAM do the systems have?

I have tried this with my profile yet my emails still seems to be showing, is there another way to hide it.
Not impressed with Avast ???

I’m facing a very similar problem. I don’t have any other security software installed, using the windows firewall.

Avast 5.0.545
Windows Firewall
OpenDNS

Can’t access any sites with web shield on… well almost.

If I try to open any site with the web shield on, the browser will refuse connection. But if I turn off the web shield, access a site, and then while still on the site, turn the web shield on, I will be able to continue browsing the site.

Worked with a limited number of sites, on forums.avast.com it works only in the subforum your in, in skatic.com and news.bbc.co.uk, seems to work across the site. And can confirm it’s not fetching from cache.

In windows firewall, avast exceptions are included, and I even disabled the firewall for diagnostics, and the problem continued. Tried a clean install, tried the regedit solution, and most other solutions mentioned somewhere here, but to no avail.

I fear it’s some obscure dns issue, could that be it? What steps should I take now to continue my diagnostics?
