Avast is causing massive lags (CPU)

Hi,

First I’d like to say that I love avast. It’s reliable and feels very transparent. And It usually has a pretty low usage.
But for some weeks or month now, my avast is causing pretty bad lag spikes.
At first I didn’t know why my PC was lagging sometimes and It does not care what I do, Browsing, watching Netflix, playing Games etc.
Every few minutes I get a few moments where everything lags on my PC for 1-3 seconds.
The lags are so bad that I lost a few games because of this. (Couldn’t do anything for a few moments)
So I decided to check whats causing the problems. First I noticed every time it lagged my PC got suddenly to 100% CPU Last.
Then I checked via the Windows Performance Tracker (perfmon) which process is using the CPU and it’s AvastSvc.exe

After googling around I decided to deactivate a few features, which are not necessary (not really many)
but it didn’t help.

So whether it’s a bug avast is having or some problem with my setup, is there anyone having an idea that could help me?

Thank You in Advance
Nico

Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)

  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??
  • Which avast!..?? Avast Free Antivirus
  • Which version…?? 18.1.2326
  • OS…?? Win 10 64 bit
  • Other security related software installed…?? CCleaner (not active) Windows Defender (not active)
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..?? Well this has nothing to do with the problem because this problem even occured after a fresh win 10 install. But I tried Bitdefender and Maleware bytes and neither had the problem.

Update to the latest version (18.2.2328): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=216700.0

Ok I just updated, but I don’t think this will help with the problem, because the Update Notes do not point out a fix related with this.

Report back and let us know.

Do a registry scan with CCleaner and look for leftovers of Bitdefender and malwarebytes and clean them.
And update to the latest version (18.2.2328).

My CPU after install latest version (18.2.2328)

Did it (found and removed Application Paths to the Installers), I also restarted after doing both and again after a few minutes there is a massive CPU Spike from AvastSvc

Well the problem is not the general CPU usage. My TaskManager looks basicly the same but AvastSvc is using 100% CPU every now and then for a few seconds.

If it helps by any means here is my hardware setup:
PCU: 450W beQuite
Motherboard: MSI ph61a-p35 b3
CPU: Intel i5-2400
GPU: AMD HD7870
RAM: 8GB
250GB SSD (on it win10 and all important programs)

The game I’m mainly playing and where I noticed the problems most: Rocket League
But as I said it seems not to depend on any program (In fact as I am writing this I had another lag…)

I’d be thankful for any kind of idea.

I attached a screenshot from the windows performance monitor:

@NicoJG Put Rocket League game to EXCLUSIONS on Behavior Shield and WebShield EXCLUSIONS tick Processes to exclude and add Rocket League exe files.
Hope this will help.

Hm thx for the idea but that does not help. It does not depend on which program is running.
I think it’s kind of a bug or maybe even a behaviour the developers intend to do.
Is there a way to report bugs to the developers?

The only thing that confuses me is that it seems only I have those problems…
Could someone check if some kind of this happend on your PC? Maybe you also have those spikes in CPU usage but it doesn’t slow your PC down because it does not use 100%.
