Avast is Gone!

Avast is Gone! Ashdisp.exe was deleted. Windows XP security center was disabled as were Windows Updates.

Can not reinstall - something just deletes the files again. I can’t install any other AV software either. In fact, if I rename a text file to Ashdisp.exe or AVP.exe (or other AV executable names) the file vanishes after about 3 seconds.

System restore won’t function. My recycle bin is gone, too. I could probably go on, but I think you might be getting the picture. Any hints…anyone at all?

Otherwise, it’s a lovely day. How’s your day going?

Sounds like it could be a Bagle Rootkit variant:

Isn’t Bagle rootkit already detected by avast?
Couldn’t this variant be detected by the generic signatures of Bagle?

Swordzman, is your avast fully updated?

It may well be a further variant, but it may be something else but attacks on AV, Firewall, etc. I would say are likely to be supported by a rootkit, which one is not so important, rather finding it is using the anti-rootkit tools.
