Hello, i am from chile so my english is not too good
i have avast 4 home edition version 4.8, windows XP
My avast is not updating since VPS 081029-0, i keep getting an error message that i have to upload my VPS, i tried to do it manualy but doesnt work and it is supposed to do it automatically.
At about avast it says that i have this VPS since 29/10/2008
i think i had mcaffe virus scan or something like that,
and i have windows firewall activated
before that vps file avast worked perfectly for like 2 years
the key is working up to 01/01/2010 and the clock/date of the computer is correct
You might want to uninstall McAfee via the control panel, if you haven’t alredy, then run the removal tool for same: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 (It’s about halfway down the page).
Is your Avast version 4.8.1335?
Updating the program version to 1335 should fix the problem. I’d still run the McAfee uninstall tool just to be sure. McAfee can be a bit like Norton- it can leave bits and pieces behind.
You can set the Avast program updates to automatic or prompt from the program settings. Maybe yours had been set to manual?
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
avast didnt updated since VPS 081029-0, so i tried to do it manually and when i click on update virus database nothings happens then i realize that the program wasnt updating too so i tried to uninstall the program to install it again and allways there is a problem when i try to uninstall it or delete the folder wich contains avast, i went to add/remove tool and when i click on remove aavst nothings happens.
Things to check:
-1) Are you running from an admin account?
-2) Apart from the out of date database, is Avast working?
if so,
-Right click the icon in the system tray,
-mouse to “Updating” then left click on “program update”
The program should then spend a little time downloading the latest version. Or a longer time if you are on dial up.
Once it has updated, it will probably want a restart.
Then check for VPS updates. If you use a third party firewall, you will need to allow Avast again, as the program has changed.
Any problems at any step, post the problem and any error message.
