Avast keeps blocking my internet connection September 2025

I have installed Avast Free in the last couple of days, and I am experiencing an issue where my Internet connection is being completely blocked. The broadband service itself is fine and other devices attached to the network have no issues.

The problem isn’t immediate when I start my computer and I can be online fine for a while before it gets blocked. If I disable protection, everything works fine straight away. I can then out the protection back on, and it continues to work… for a while before it goes off again.

I know others have had this problem but wanted to start a new thread rather than post on an older one.

Are there logs etc that I can look at to find out what is triggering Avast to block the internet completely? Any help in resolving this would be gratefully received, thanks!

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.

There isn’t much to work with here.
Are you getting an Avast Alert or an error message from the site ?
Is this for every link ?

What are your Avast Firewall and Network Shield settings. A screenshot of these might help, save your screen shot/s on the local computer and drag and drop it into the post using file explorer or other file management software.

Having the same issue with Security Premium.
Keeps block network connection both through Ethenet and Wi-Fi
Think it’s something to do with Avast not allowing / recognising DNS Server (not that I know what that is!!)
Can’t seem to be able to change the firewall settings to get around this. Run Windows Network Troubleshooter that seems to resolve the issue for a few minutes and then drops out again. This is through WiFi at home currently. Am trying to work from home and it’s a nightmare

Same for me :grimacing:

We ask questions, specifically trying to find the likely cause of the fault without detailed information. Without that it is difficult to offer possible suggestions .

As I suggested:

The Firewall and Network Shield work closely together,

Hi, thanks to everyone who replied.

Unfortunately, I ended up having to uninstall Avast Free as I use my computer for work as a video editor every day, and it was affecting my business being offline. I now have Bitdefender installed, and everything has been perfect.

Interestingly, I moved to Avast after having identical issues with AVG Free. The interface of AVG is nigh on identical to Avast Free. Are they actually the same app rebranded?

Avast and AVG are both part of the Gen Digital group.
