Avast keeps stalling my pc

Ever since I have had Avast it has slowed my pc down. It seems to “stall” everything. I have noticed that this happens when the Orange Avast Icon stops spinning.

Any idea?

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?

I have found that this happens when Avast! is used in conjunction with some HIPS based Firewalls. I even had hard lockups occur on first access of applications. The only thing I can think of that might explain why this happened to me and not others is that since Avast! 5 is optimized for multi-core processors and I’m still using a single core AMD Turion 64, maybe that is at the root of it.
