Hi- My neighbor clicked on a prompt from Avast! to run a deep scan, it apparently detected viruses everywhere, then his laptop shut down, and it can’t even start up now. I think Avast! owes him a laptop that works. This is so messed up. Toshiba laptop running Windows 7
What was the name of the virus it detected ?
Hi essexboy- He said it was a red Avast! window in the lower right corner… not a very savvy guy, but he followed the onscreen instructions and said it was deleting all sorts of “infected” and “corrupt” files. A lot ended with “adw.” That’s all he can remember. I feel terrible, because I recommended the Avast! free version to him. Apparently, it was scanning for about 15 minutes, then his computer turned off. When he asked me for help, Windows said it couldn’t start up, and said it would attempt repair and restore. But it shut off during that process, and after starting up again, ran for about 30 seconds, then just shut down completely. I’m freaking out, because I feel responsible for suggesting Avast! in the first place. Thank you.
have you tried Safe Mode? If I had to guess one of the Avast! drivers is now corrupt. If you can access that run the tools from the first thread. Post the logs and Essex can have a thorough look into what’s wrong

The logs needed are AdwCleaner/MBAM/OTL/aswMBR
Scroll down to this part of the thread and then use OTLPE/FRST
If you cannot Boot the computer
Thank you, alan and essexboy. I don’t know what happened. After being off all night, it managed to boot up and run repair and recovery this morning. I sincerely appreciate your help and I will try to get the logs.
