Hi, I have this problem: everytime I shut off my PC or I restart it, the operating system tries to start, but it automatically restarts itself. This happens 4 o 5 times before I can use the PC.
This problem happens from the first time I have installed Avast 4 Home edition.
Before I have had Norton antivirus, but now it’s uninstalled.
My operating system is Windows 2000 Professional, CPU Intel Pentium4 2,40 Ghz, RAM 1048,048 KB.
My PC is always connected to the internet, by a LAN (provider www.fastweb.it).
I use a firewall: Zone Alarm 3.5.
Can you please solve my trouble? Otherwise I have to uninstall Avast, because this problem is too heavy to tolerate…
Thank you very much.
I think Windows 2000 > Control Panel > System should have an option to avoid automatic restating of the computer. Then you can take a note of the error numbers (blue screen). Write them down here.

Avoiding automatic restarting it’s not a solution
The PC automatically restarts itself when there is a system error…
Why Avast produces a system error in my PC?
I think Avast is in conflict with Active Desktop.
When the operating system is starting, it stops when the Active Desktop is going on, and the PC restarts itself… many times… until one time it’s luckier and OK…
No blue screen, no error numbers… just a strange noise in the case and the restarting.
I specify: this happens ONLY from when I installed Avast… so… no hardware problems!
I have uninstalled Avast, and now everything is OK. Unfortunatly in my PC there is something that fights with Avast… but I don’t know what. I also have another PC (Windows XP): overthere Avast is excellent! Thank you for your atention…
May be there are some Norton remnants in the system?
Wouldn't be surprised. Has been an issue for some users in the past. (You're not alone).
Download and follow the directions here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Should do the job. Personally I'd download it, disconnect from the web, uninstall Avast, run the tool, restart, reinstall Avast, restart, connect, update. Just seems more thorough that way, but maybe not necessary.
Thank you to all of you and specially to PSW and Tarq57 , because I have used the Norton removal, then reinstalled Avast, and now it works without problems!!! There was a conflict with some Norton’s residuals somewhere…
Thank you very much!
You’re welcome. Tell the truth, the trick with running the Norton Uninstall tool was something I read about in this forum first, so can’t claim all the credit for that idea!
Really glad it’s sorted.
