Hi, I think that Avast may be corrupted. When I reboot or start up my computer, it loads up fine and gets to my desktop but Avast is not there. I have to wait three to five minutes before finally Avast loads and shows on my taskbar. This has been happening for almost two weeks. Should I uninstall Avast and then re-install in case it has corrupted files. If so please will it un-install through my Programs and Features or do I need the Avast un-install untility. Also how do I download Avast again without getting a virus because I would have no antivirus. I need to know how to download a new version without getting infected. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I am running Vista Home Edition (x64). Internet Explorer7.
HI,
From your description, I don’t believe Avast is corrupted. As far as I gather you have installed a software/program that launches itself at start up and slows the computer down. Avast usually lets all the applications load before loading if it takes too long for an application to load. The reason behind this is that if a program requires a lot of system resources to load at start up, Runing Avast at the same time would require even more resources. I suggest you check which programs load at start up and try to isolate the culprit.
To ease your stress, I don’t believe an uninstall is required. A corrupted file would not slow down but rather halt/crash the entire application.
If you need more help with this please reply, and mention what Windows version you have, and what other security software you have on the computer. This allows forum users to better assist you.
Cheers
You should first try a repair install of your existing Avast installation. This can be done though the control program> manage programs, select Avast, and one of the options that will appear is “repair”. Select that. You’ll need to be connected to the net.
To be protected while installing new AV (and uninstalling the old) (this is a darned good question, BTW) is actually fairly straightforward. You download the new installer file first (and anything else you’ll need) then disconnect from the net while uninstalling/rebooting/re-installing.
Was there any other AV ever installed on this 'pooter?
Have you had any other problems in the recent past?
Is any other security software installed now?
No, you can repair off line also.
