avast message in e-mails

I have been using avast! home for several years and would feel unsafe without it.
I have just noticed this evening that my e-mails no longer have the “e-mail clean” message - either outgoing or incoming.
A check of the message source shows that it is being checked by avast! as shown below.

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 080815-0, 15/08/2008), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean
X-MINX-Orig-IP: XX.XXX.XXX.XXX
X-Spam-Score: -0.6 (/)
X-Spam-Level: /
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 080815-0, 15/08/2008), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Am I doing something very silly? The operating system is Windows ME and I use Thunderbird for my e-mail

Have you checked that the option is checked in the Internet Mail settings, Customize, POP3 and SMTP tabs ?
It is off by default, so if you have done a clean reinstall at any point that could be why.

Personally I feel it is a waste of time for inbound email as if it is infected all hell will break loose and you will know. The same is technically true for outbound email but it promotes avast to other people, so no bad thing ;D

Many thanks for the reply - spot on!
My diagnosis was right - I was doing something very silly!

You’re welcome.
