Avast & Microsoft Windows Updates [Thread To Post Results, OK or Issues ?]

I’ve taken your advice and checked performance over a couple of days. Sure enough, everything has been stable since the downloads completed.

I have to admit to never really paying attention to MS updates over the years, so obviously they’ve not caused me grief before this. Checking the update history, I see that on the day in question - Dec 19th - there were 120 downloads. During the whole of November there were fewer than 20. My settings allow for updates to be installed automatically (see attached), is that the best option?

Thanks for your help.

It is just my opinion but software packages like Windows, iTunes, iOS (for iPhone), Avast need some research before you blindly install latest updates. I am BIG fan of Avast but not fan at all of their Fall releases…I wait for example six months to have Avast get all their bugs out. For me, these type software packages have catastrophic effects if something goes wrong…at a minimum you’ll spend day(s) getting things back to normal. So, the risk/reward of being on the “bleeding” edge of updates is not worth it. So, to your question I set my updates for basically the “let me know there are updates and I’ll download and install”. You get the pop-up and this can be a notice to do some quick Googling. I can tell you some research time up front can save a whole lot of headaches.

Thanks, that sounds like good advice.

Haven’t had any problems even with the reported trouble updates.
Windows 8 and 10 all updates without problems.
Now waiting for the next build update for Windows 10.

Thanks so much! Happy New Year!

(January Windows Updates)
All Important Updates Installed OK…see attached.
I also installed the recommended NET Framework 4.5.2 (KB2901983) after the “Windows” updates…went fine.
W7 64-bit Avast 2014/V9

Had the exact same experience as thekochs. All Windows updates from today installed and computer is working fine. Windows 7 64bit and avast 2015.10.0.2208.

Thanks! this thread is so very helpful!!

WSUS installed all just fine this month. Installed recommended .NET Framework 4.5.2 after security updates reboot so if there were issues with .NET, then that would be much easier to peg down.

No issues this month. 8)

I had a few updates pending. My PC did crash a couple of times when running them, probably caused by me being impatient and continuing to work on the machine at the same time. Note to self: don’t. ::slight_smile:

“Note To You”…DO NOT.
Seriously, I hit update, cross my fingers, but truly “walk away”…watching the downloading & install will drive anyone crazy.
Best to leave alone, let finish, reboot (even if it does not require), upon login let PC settle for 5 minutes…Windows cleaning up logs, etc.

me too :-[ Next time, I will walk away and forget it until it’s done, reboot, and wait again as thekochs recommends

All MS Updates of this week went good for me on Windows 8.1 x64

Same here. There were no Windows optional updates to be wary about this week it seems.

That time again…anyone done the Windows updates ?
Post results, O/S version & Avast version.
Note: As a precaution I turn off Avast’s SDM (Self Defense Module) in Settings>Troubleshooting while I do the Windows updates.
No one has ever told me this is needed but in past versions of Avast the SDM had issues with System Restore and thus I read into that “things” changing “things” within the deep kernel-O/S may conflict with Avast itself. I’m not recommending this for others but wanted to post…I turn it back on right after reboot and successful Windows updates.

According to some reports, better skip KB3001652 for now.

Windows 8.1, Avast, 2015.0.2208…Installed 11 updates yesterday afternoon and 1 this morning without any problems

KB3001652 Update Pulled Due to Issues on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7

http://news.softpedia.com/news/KB3001652-Update-Pulled-Due-to-Issues-on-Windows-8-1-and-Windows-7-472797.shtml

I didn’t install KB3021917 because Microsoft description of this update is vague :

“This update performs diagnostics in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in order to determine whether performance issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. Telemetry is sent back to Microsoft for those computers that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). This update will help Microsoft and its partners deliver better system performance for customers who are seeking to install the latest Windows operating system.”

Just finished updating all updates without any problems including the questionable one.
Windows 10 also had updates if your doing the beta testing of this OS.

thanks so much!
