Try to delete the the checklistsimple.chm file (or even all the files in C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\avast4\English\Help folder). Then, invoke an avast! update (Program or iAVS, it shouldn’t make any difference). The deleted files should be restored… would this help?

Problem is solved. I tried deleting the files and ran into a problem. I had deleting files blocked on the control panel options. I unchecked the box and have left it that way. Do you think that may have had something to do with it?

I’m not familiar with any such feature built-in to Windows. Or is this a third-party app?
What exactly do you mean by “control panel options”? avast! Behavior Blocker? That would be rather strange (for .chm files)… but even if it was the case, I doubt that could be the reason.
Sorry for the lack of clarity. On the resident task setting, blocker tab of the on access protection control panel. One of the file extensions is ch?

Ah, you are right. But to enable the feature, you would have to check some of the checkboxes below (“Opening the file for writing”, “Renaming file”, “Deleting file”, “Formatting”) - did you? If none of them is checked, the feature is turned off.
“Renaming file” and “Formatting” are still checked, “Deleating file” I unchecked.
