avast needs to restart...................

Sure have been getting a lot of notices that avast needs to restart my operating system, three today and about a half dozen this week and some of those were two times on the same day. Have the latest edition of avast home edition with all the updates. Is this normal?

I wouldn’t think so ???

Do these “requests” just pop out of the blue or do they accompany some sort of action? What OS are you running?

Best Regards…

Operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file \setup\reboot.txt

If deleting reboot.txt doesn’t stop the requests for reboot check this:
Check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains “PendingFileRenameOpertaions”.
Check its contents and if there’s only “reboot.txt” from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don’t delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

Not sure what the problem with your shutdown might be (does this happen every time?), there could be something running that isn’t ending correctly. Hopefully something may be in the windows event logs.

I’m running still WIN98SE (it works!); avast was not doing anything specific other than perhaps updating itself, I didn’t pay too close attention but seem to remember hearing some sort of activity going on; have not had any of it today, will check on registry key and report back as I don’t find a reboot.txt file in \setup.

Just checked and can’t find anything in registry under Session Manager named
“reboot.txt” or “PendingFileRenameOpertaions”.

I’ve gotten reboot notifications now and then in the past but nothing like the number I’ve had this week; however, today it’s been ‘quiet’.

 Hi Jedakay :

Other than Avast, what other security programs to you
have on your computer ? Are you running an Avast scan
at least once a day ? If yes, why ?

So much for the ‘moratorium’, just got on the internet and about five minutes later avast needed a restart, does not give a reason why, just asks if I want to do it now/yes/no; have not run a virus scan since last Sunday and the only thing that’s loaded in the startup group is ashserv.exe and ashwebsv.exe, the latter is the only avast item running in the ‘close program box’. ‘Web Shield’ and ‘Standard Shield’ are the only two items activated and I pretty much am going with the standard settings on everything, I just let avast do its thing… I have Spybot and Spyware Blaster but they were in the system before I installed avast and as I said up until this week there was no problem like this. Guess, I go and restart once more.

Guess I need to learn to put my thoughts all in one post but I did want to mention that with each requested restart my system configuration files are being updated when I do restart.

Today, it’s still the same thing; avast is asking me to restart the system and when I do ‘setup’ updates my configuration files. The funny thing is that in my 'log viewer the reasons for my requested restarts for today and at least one day back are not even shown in the ‘notice’ section of the ‘log viewer’; this is getting very annoying, HELP!
