Hello

Currently setup a new Avast server with the administration console on Server 2008 R2. The services installed fine and we can manually add computers but the discovery runs for about 5 seconds and then stops. It doesn’t say it fails it just isn’t finding any computers. We run all of our computers in the same workgroup.

So far based of what I found in the forums I have done the following:

  • Disabled Windows Firewall
  • Ensure the Console settings IP matched the same as the static IP settings on the nic. (Only 1 nic on the sever)
  • Ran Discovery search for all computers and a discovery with WORKGROUP defined.
  • Changed log in settings on server to match what is set on majority of clients local accounts.
  • Ensured Network Discovery was enabled and that I could find all of my computers in windows Network search.

I went through the logs and when I run the discovery I don’t see any errors jumping out at me. I have been digging through the internet better part of the day but haven’t been able to find a solution. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated as after all that I still can’t find any of my computers.

Well just after reading the first few statments you said “We run all of our computers in the same WORKGROUP”

Are your workstations on a domain or just in a workgroup? how is the Server 2008 setup, what is it used for?

That might be the first issue and correct me if I am mistaken but I believe the majority of the computers that are located by Avast! will be done through the Domain Controller of the Domain the server should be controlling.

Unfortuantely we don’t run a domain due to the fact we are still using Novell eDirectory to handle that aspect.

The server is set to just a workgroup with no domain, and it’s primary and only purpose is to run Avast. I should also mention it setup as a virtual server running on vmware ESX 4.1.

So I think this is very very important, I am an Avast! Newbie, so I am not sure if you need to be running a domain and have the computers in an Active Directory for it to find these computers. Someone with more experience will have to help answer this question for you… sorry I couldn’t be more helpful !

Mccopps… my reason for this answer is because when I removed old computers from my ACTIVE DIRECTORY - the computers dissapared.

so maybe you dont have to run the domain, but can you setup the ACTIVE DIRECTORY on the server? and then just place the computers inside of it.

Then from their Avast should find all the computers inside the AD?

You would have to enter the computers manuall on the AD but then AVAST can do the rest.

@mcoopes are you using the default task/job to find computers?

I know that it has non sense, but if you create a new task/job to find computer using NT Lan (IP) you could see all your machines.

AEA is perfect to run in a workgroup environment, you don’t need any domain or active directory.
