I’m looking into setting up an Active Directory server on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 that we want to run Avast on.
We have free licenses of avast! File Server Security. Is this the correct product to use?
The server will probably run AD only, not be a file server (except for the SYSVOL (netlogon) dir).
There is a Microsoft Knowledgebase article named:
Virus scanning recommendations for Enterprise computers that are running currently supported versions of Windows (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158) that mentions lots of files that should be excluded.
Is this necessary? (The “Exclude the following files from this folder and all its subfolders” part will contain lots of directories and I don’t want to add them manually, and keep them updated).
Is it possible in any way to add a list of exceptions in one go, and not one and one as in the GUI?
Is it possible to use variables like %windir% etc in the exclusion list in Avast?
Dear sir, there are NO free licenses of avast! File Server Security, I can guarantee that!
(The “Exclude the following files from this folder and all its subfolders” part will contain lots of directories and I don’t want to add them manually, and keep them updated).

NO, not usually, but there are some cases where an application must be excluded I.E. Phillips I-SITE. Proper File Server settings in avast! may alleviate all your concerns.
Is it possible in any way to add a list of exceptions in one go, and not one and one as in the GUI? YES, if you use the console, and have the exceptions typed already in the correct format
Is it possible to use variables like %windir% etc in the exclusion list in Avast? Not that I am aware of, but again, I think that you are overthinking this. I don’t have any esxclusions like this in the 4000 networks I support using avast! across the USA.

Ah, sorry, translation error (since English is not my native language). By free I meant “unused” or “available” licenses, we have a 15 sever license.
Thanks for your answer. When you say “if you use the console”, which console is that? Tried looking for a manual, but when I go to http://www.avast.com/download-documentation or http://www.avast.com/support I cannot find avast Server Security in the choices, is it a product that is on it’s way out?
