Actually, the problem is not that it’s English Windows or English version of avast! - what matters is the setting of the system locale (or in particular, the “Language for non-Unicode programs”).

i would say the problem is that avast is a non-unicode program.

i could, of course, set chinese as a system locale for nu programs, but, i also have some files with japanese chars in their filenames on one of my laptops …
