avast! on YouTube

Found this on YouTube. How-to: Install and run avast! antivirus.

Educational. Couple of problems with it for me, however. He clicks the “Run” button to run the downloaded file before manually scanning it with on-board antispyware progams first. I don’t open anything I download from the net, not even from sites I trust, without a quick malware check first!

Second problem is the instruction to “Delete” any infected files found during a scan. I like to quarantine files. I’d be afraid a false positive might cause a system file to be deleted and bring on a bucketful of recovery headaches at next boot. With quarantining the files first, you can pursue the possibility of a false positive before letting Avast take irreversible action.

Thanks for the tips. I can see where deleting a file instead of sending it to quarantine can cause trouble.

You’re quite welcome. And welcome to the forum.

Here’s one that’s a bit surprising.

Have no idea how that can work.

Hey buttoni, I noticed in your signature that you run firefox 2.0.0.5. You just forgot to update the signature, right? 2.0.0.6 was a critical update.

Yep, already running the newer version. Appreciate the reminder to update my siggy, Tgell.

Just because the two AV’s haven’t “butted heads” yet, doesn’t mean he’s gonna continue to have such smooth sailing with both running concurrently. He has just been lucky so far and I’m certain will encounter problems eventually with both live.

Just wanted to say, thanks for this information! I’ve always hestiated deleting anything in the quarantine area if I couldn’t find information about it in a google search. You just gave me the reason this is wise! Never thought about it before, but it’s true. Had I deleted, for example, adaware.exe (sic) I would have had major headaches and a panic about where my lavasoft program went. Wise precaution.

How would you enter the Chest (Quarantine) if you cannot boot after moving a system file to Chest?
Alwil never answered this question for me…
