Avast Online Security has crashed. Click this Balloon to reload the extension.

After a Windows update and Avast brought my 8.1 computers to their knees, I had to uninstall Avast. I thought I did, but I am now still getting the message “Avast Online Security has crashed. Click this Balloon to reload the extension.” (See attached image)

I’ve deleted the Avast directory under programs. I’ve checked Task Manager and see no Avast service running. I’ve looked for Avast extensions in IE and Chrome, but see none.

Any help where this message is coming from?

Uninstall our software using avastclear http://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility

I did. And I did again after your suggestion. I rebooted in safe mode and and let the Avastclear run. Still getting this message. Any clues on how to manually uninstall this?

then i guess it is in your browser(s) …

No guesswork needed. It’s a browser extension/plug-in.
Uninstall it via ‘Tools’ → ‘Add ons’ → ‘Extensions’ in Firefox,
or ‘Settings’ → ‘Extensions’ in Chrome.

Yup, it looks like there was still a Chrome extension. I thought I checked for extensions, but I guess I overlooked this. Thanks.
