There is a problem with that Avast browser addon that causes the browser to crash on certain websites but that can be fixed by going to the control panel->Programs and Features->Avast Premier->Change. Then unchecking the browser protection and clicking OK. This will uninstall the browser protection which isn’t really needed.
Yes, that would most likely be the “Avast Online Security” plugin/addon.
As stated you can uninstall the component (Browser Protection) or Disable it in IE 11 tools/ ‘Manage Addons’. 
Yes I too have seen this as well as right clicking and opening in a new tab not working. Disabling the add-on in IE11 resolves it so hopefully a solution will be provided soon. Doesn’t seem to happen if I use Chrome though.
For me it has been happening for a number of months now.
