Avast Premium HP Pavilion Family Safety Account - Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap

HI

I recently upgraded to Avast premium and on my son’s new laptop we added Avast as part of our licence group. Sadly though the laptop is now unstable on his account whereas on my account as administrator is fine.

Whenever he just logs on to his account Windows 8.1 immediately shows a notice saying there is a problem giving the error code “Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap” and then reboots. On my account no problem! Additionally to this we are now seeing a secondary error which is “KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED”.

Here are the details on the machine:

HP Pavilion Laptop
MS Windows 8.1 (fully updated)
Intel Core i3
RAM 8GB

Since reading about the problem somewhere on this forum I have downgraded to the the “Free” version of Avast which is NOT ideal. And I am logging on with no problem.

Any help or advice please?

Thanks

If there is no problem on the admin account then that would suggest a problem with the sub account. Have you tried creating a new sub account and seeing if it works there ?

I will certainly give that a go and see what happens.

Now I have installed “Avast Free” the sub account seems stable. One thing I did think of is that I may have applied the licence file for the Avast premium product on the sub account that has Family Safety enabled. What I will do is reinstall the Premium product and apply the licence file on the Administrator account and see if that makes a difference. Maybe the monitoring doesn’t like the fact that changes to the sub account need a password from the adult?

I’ll give this a go and see what happens.

Thanks

Jon
