I have been using Magic Mail Monitor for many years (currently MMM 2.94b10). I have been doing so since started using Avast 4.1 No problem ever encountered. MMM is an open source POP email notifier that sits in my Win XP systray and notifies me when new email arrives. I can also click on the systray icon, open its window and retrieve/download emails in plain text format from whatever email servers. For details about MMM, please refer to here, http://mmm3.sourceforge.net/
Please be kind/patient by referring to the MMM screenshot while continuing your reading. Thanks…
The MMM email retrieval/download is what I am having problem with Avast Pro 4.6.603 to which I just upgraded. With Avast “On-Access Protection Control” active, MMM will be unable to connect to mail servers, the Status says: “connection lost”. I know there are emails, because Mailbox shows the sender’s name. Except Mailbox column, all other columns shows nothing. Of course, there is no way retrieve/download emails from mail servers via MMM’s interface. Strangely not all all email servers I am having problems with retriveing emails from. The ports I am having problems with are both POP3: 110 and 995.
I tried to investigate by pausing One-Access Protection Control providers one at a time. With any of the eight provider paused, the problem would still persist. The only way to rectify the problem, so far is once “Stop On-Access Protection”, and re-enable it. This IS a huge hassle because MMM is setup run at XP startup and the way it notifies me of new emails is such a critical component of my life and work.
Any remedy to this situation? Appreciate your kind advices.
Please do a forum search for Hotpopper, because I think this is a similar situation where MMM and avast are monitoring the same ports and they need to be sorted into an order.
Port 995 is the SSL POP3 email port, and antivirus scanners will generally not work with encrypted email without considerable external effort. Port 110 is the default POP3 port, so I don’t understand why that one doesn’t work. What ports show up under the email scanner “customize/redirect” tab? I use Mailwasher for a similar function with no problem on multiple email accounts with 4.6.603.
Thanks for the hints. I will check the thread Dave mentioned ASAP.
I am curious that I’ve never had the problem up till the last version prior to 4.6.603. Btw, for MMM all port is set at 110 and previously email retrieval was working. Port 995 is set only for my email client Outlook Express and Thunderbird.
To follow up my initial problem report…
I searched the “avast! 4.x Home/Pro” section of this forum. Although I did read a number of threads about how to configure email notifiers including Magic Mail Monitor (MMM), I just can’t find SPECIFIC solution to my problem. I tried every method I can think of without success. I have not had experience customizing avast.ini. Having read Techinical’s KB thread about avast.ini, I still don’t have specific ideas. I would truly appreciate someone could kindly offer SPEFICIC help here, as such something I can copy + paste in avast.ini if that is where the problem resides.
As shown below, I have listed all data/information I have gathered so far.
My problem in summary:
With all “On-Acess Protection Control” (Avast OAPC) providers enabled, MMM is unable to access mail servers I’ve st up and retrieve emails. The problem will persist, even when Avast “Internet Mail” is terminated and/or terminated and renabled. However, MMM will again work fine, when I terminate and re-enable all Avast OAPC providers.
I have 8 mailboxes hosted by 3 mail servers set up in MMM, all at port 110. The POP port is also 110 under, OAPC > Internet Mail > Redirect. In my initial post, I mentioned I also have SSL email accounts set up under MMM. They have been set up at port 110. With this setting, MMM was working just as it should up to the last version prior Avast 4.6.603. I understand anti-virus email scanners mostly do not work with SSL email accounts within an email client (mine are Outlook Express and Thunderbird). I don’t mind that Avast does not scan emails while I am using my email clients set up at POP port 995 and SMTP port 465, as Avast scanned within MMM before emails actually arrived in my Inbox.
System configurations
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
Email clients using: Outlook Express & Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0
Firewall: Outpost Personal Firewall Pro 2.5.375.4822 (374)
Avast Pro 4.6.603
Data/Information Gathered while the problem persisting
Please note: I have 8 mailboxes hosted by 3 mail servers. However as shown above, only the default’s POP/SMTP server is listed. The servers I am having problem with within MMM are not listed under avast.ini. Is where anything here?
I prepared aswMaiSv.log as instructed and emailed it to you as RAR attachment.
Thanks for noticing the problem. I greatly appreciate your time investigating this case.
