Avast Pro disabled at startup

When I start my computer the Avast Pro is disabled. I have to manually start it.

I have looked at all the settings, and I have failed to find the correct setting?

First, did I overlook some setting, or does this indicated something else?
User error, or something else?

Because, I did not change any settings and before Avast Pro was starting just fine.

Hi,

I’m not sure what exactly “disable” means ? Do you mean that avast! after correct installation ! doesn’t startup completely or just that all your providers as webshield, standart shield etc… are terminated ? You can see avast! icon in system tray? Manual start on-access protection is possible or not ?

Can you tell us:
operation system version
avast! Pro version

I am talking about Avast On-Access protection. The 8 shields… They are all terminated when I start up. And, yes, I can manually start them.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security based software do you have that might have an impact, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

What is strange is that it was working before, has anything changed, like the addition of a new application, the latest avast program update ?
What version are you running, 4.7.986 is the latest version ?
Is there a Red circle and bar over that avast system tray icon ?

I will ask it too, what is your operating system ?

I did use some online virus scanners. I used Trend Micro House Call. I used Windows Live Care online scanner.

I have windows defender x64. I am running the 30-day trial of Trend Micro anti-spyware. It has the ability to processes from starting (but while running on a Limited User account, Trend Micro anti-spyware does not start, yet avast is still not working properly). I have the Nvidia hardware firewall, although this was turned off without my knowledge (the program icon indicated it was on, but the logs indicated that it was off). Also, I had one instance where avast was on but windows said it was off.

As far as installing other apps, I was downloading PHP editing programs (although, I was not downloading freeware, only programs that you had to pay to activate).
Here is a list that I can remember:
-Dreamweaver
-MySQL
-PHP
-Zend Studios (for editing PHP programs)
-Open Source Maguma studio (for PHP programming)
-Some programming IDE (cannot remember the name, but it was one expensive program)
-Help Star (from a Help Desk Text Book)
-Trend Micro’s Hijack This

I also do remember, the latest program I installed was MS Office 2000, yet I already had MS Word 2003 (I did not install Word 2000).

I also noticed that I am getting blank errors in my system log. IE:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 1.

There is a red cicle with a bar and my OS is Windows XP x64. Also, windows complains that my virus protection has been turned off.
This problem occurs on both an Aministrative account and Limited user account.

I did check my version, and it is 4.7.986. Also, there are warning messages and exceptions in my avast log file.

Such as:
2/14/2007 5:58:14 PM System 1148 AAVM - initialization error: Unhandled exception in AaavmProiderStop, Standard

and there is about 5 of these exceptions.

And I have about 35 of these warning messages, all the same:

1/5/2007 2:56:27AM SYSTEM 1508 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x2000001A, dwRes is 2000001A.
1/5/2007 2:56:27AM SYSTEM 1508 An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.

0xC00000142 occured with dwRes = 0xC00000142first, and just once.
Then, 0x2000001A with dwRes = 2000001A, happend about 30 times in a row.
Then, 0x00000426 with dwRes = 7DF10020 occured 3 times in a row.
Then, the 0xC0000142 error happend twice more 2 days ago.

-------EDIT----------
Also, very important, but I found these two lines in my log:
4/22/2007 2:04:50 PM åõa}0aí 1116 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0xC0000142, dwRes is C0000142.
4/22/2007 2:04:50 PM åõa}0aí 1116 An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.

Apparently, åõa}0aí is supose to be a user, yet I do not have a user account named åõa}0aí, why would I right?

I can’t see anything obvious here, but I have no experience with XP 64, there have been a few posts about some issues with avast and xp 64, but that seems to have been for browsing.

Was avast working up until the 4.7.986 program update ?

In XP32 bit the Red circle is usually associated with AAVM detecting an RPC error (often a result of another AV or remnants on your system), if you clicked on the avast icon whilst the red circle is on it it should display the error.

I don’t know if either of these will be of help with XP 64bit

I not sure what else to suggest, hopefully one of the Alwil team will pick up on this.

Nevermind, seems I caught a virus just now.

WARNING, THE WEB SITE i AM ABOUT TO POST POTENTIALLY HAS A VIRUS, IF YOU VISIT IT, IT WILL TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF.

DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK, DO NOT VISIT THIS WEB SITE, DO NOT VISIT GMBAR.COM!!!

ok, enough with the warnings, you get the point. Just DONT go to that site!

I visited www DOT gmbar DOT com, and I used the google cache. and my computer shut down.
I read on another forum about www DOT gmbar DOT com and another user claimed that it contained a virus.

In another section, I will post about this and see if we can get this virus submitted to avast, if in fact it is one.

Please remove the links for that website from your post.

Wouldn’t want others clicking on those links infecting their pc’s.

Thanks

yea, sorry, I did not reallize url’s were automatically turned into links on this site.

Did you try this? http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=27835.msg227957#msg227957

Well a DrWeb link check on that URL, www dot gmbar dot com turns up clean, though there are 5 scripts on that page, they in themselves might be benign they could well make a call on a malware file. Or if there is an iFrame on the page (didn’t go that far) that could run the malware which is located elsewhere.

Can you please check if the Resident Protection task is marked as “default”?

To do this, please start avast in Enhaced GUI, go to the Tasks folder, and check the icon of the Resident Protection task. Does it have a “check” symbol on it (in the upper left corner)? If not, right-click the task, and choose “Mark as Default”. That should do the trick.

Thanks
Vlk

Wow, they all magically uncheck themselvs.
