Hi, i have windows xp sp3.
I have ran Avast for a year on this computer with no problems.
This week i noticed that the Real Time shields are Off.
Clicking turn on does nothing. clicking fix it does nothing.
I have googled the problem but noone else seems to have the same problem.
I uninstalled Avast. Ran Crap Cleaner. Installed Avast again.
Real time sheilds worked the first time. But booting up again and again it is back how it was. Real time shields are off, and the turn on function and fix it function do nothing.
Have you rebooted after changing those settings or after “fixing it”?
Is Avast Service automatically started?

Any current security tools? Which edition of Avast (Free/Pro/IS)? Windows XP SP3 x32/x64?
Check that your registration is current (summary → current status) (this “shouldn’t” be related, but anyway).

No need to run CCleaner. Download anew the latest stable version of Avast (from the official site only).
Then download the Clean Uninstall Utility from http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility.
Use “Add/Remove Programs” from Windows Control Panel to uninstall Avast.
Reboot into Windows Safe Mode and run the Clean Uninstall Utility.
Then reboot into Normal Mode and using the just downloaded Setup.exe, install Avast, and reboot again.
Report here your results.
