Avast scan still appears to run after stopping

I ran a full scan (Yes, I know, it’s not as necessary as it used to be), and when I came back to my computer five hours later it was still in progress. I stopped it before it was finished as I decided to just run it another time, but when I hit stop and then get the “scan stopped” screen, the scan still appears to be running: The tab in the task bar still has the progress bar, The UI screen still says that it’s running. But every time I click “See details” it just tells me the Scan is stopped. The Scan history also shows that it was stopped and interrupted prematurely. When I look at the task bar it’s still running and using more CPU.

I can’t remember a stopped scan taking this long to actually stop. Should I just restart my computer?

Windows contain lots of archive/image files that contain other files. Scans will normally stop after the current file has been completed. So if a scan is mid way through a archive/image it can take a while to finish - hence the delay.

It is worth noting that other factors (e.g. drive read speed, available memory) can play a major part.
