Avast scanning downloaded files on desktop

Hi gang,
Being a newbie, I’m hoping I’m in the right place. My OS is Windows98SE and, of course, my antivirus software is Avast’s-- Home Edition.

I can’t tell ya’ll just how GREAT I think Avast really is!!! It hit another homerun bottom of the 9th, bases loaded!! Tonight, it caught a “cpbrkpie.ocx” (Malware, I believe) that both Spyware Doctor AND Ad-Aware missed!! 8)

I’m exceedingly careful in what I open, when and where I download but I swear it seems more and more, Malware is my culprit!! I’m an AVG convert for sure and took a chance on AVAST by reading users opinons from download.com–I’m so thankful I decided to give Avast a try! I even swung my brother.in.law and sis over from AVG as well and like me, they love it!

With all of that said, I have a two-fold question for ya’ll. Here goes:

 1. Do you know if Avast can scan a downloaded file on your desktop prior to installing it? If so, how do I set it up to do this?

 2. I’m in the process of having DSL installed. It should be up and running no later than tomorrow, Sat., 07.02.05. Do you know if there is anything, i.e. setting changes, etc. that I must do to make sure my Avast is working as wonderful with my DSL as it has with my dialup?

I can’t find anything in what I’ve read and hoping the “pros” ;D that use Avast can assist with my requests. I can’t thank you enough for taking your time to read and answer with your advice.

Have a great Holiday! and thanks again ;D

Hi there, Standard Shield should scan all files or programs that are being open, run, or download from your PC.
You don’t really need to do anything unless you want to do a avast! quick scan by right clicking the file and click the one with an “a” icon next to it.

2. I'm in the process of having DSL installed. It should be up and running no later than tomorrow, Sat., 07.02.05. Do you know if there is anything, i.e. setting changes, etc. that I must do to make sure my Avast is working as wonderful with my DSL as it has with my dialup?

When you install your DSL, they might want you to disable your antivirus by terminating avast! shields.

That’s all I know, I’m sure others will give you more info.

I have upgraded to DSL one month ago. I have no changes, avast works fine as with dial up. Good luck using avast! ;D

If you use a download manager, you can set
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe
to scan your downloaded files.
If not, you must configure the Standard Shield to scan open/created/modified files. Anyway, on-access scanning of archive files is a Professional version feature…

Just change the Update (Connections) settings from dial-up (modem) to a permanent connection.
You can tweak the automatic update if you change some avast4.ini file settings (click Settings in my signature and browse a little).

Thank you so very much for helping me with my questions! :-* and, My DSL is up and running! 8) Talk about dancing feet! ;D dancing feet! ;D Ya’ll know what I’ll be doing tonight, right?

I have another concern that just came about when my DSL came on line. :frowning: Needless to say, I need your expertise one more time.

Here goes:
When I was using dialup, the blue #3 ball was continually rotating letting me know that Avast was on the job. The instant DSL was activated, I noticed it IS NOT rotating at all. When I place my cursor over Avast’s icon in the system tray, it reads:

Avast! On-Access Scanner: 6 Provider(s) total, 5 running.

While using dialup, it only read “5 providers, 4 running.” Please tell me that my avast is on point and protecting my system. Its worrying me that it is no longer rotating as it did when I had dialup. I know the ball’s rotation shouldn’t and isn’t my primary concern BUT my DSL provider (Cavalier Telephone) DOES NOT provide any protection whatsoever. :-

As always, thank you again for taking your time to read and answer my request. ;D

Happy 4th Gang!

avast! installation does not vary with your connection type. Dial-up or DSL are the same for providers, etc.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus and choose ‘Change/Remove’, then check/uncheck the providers you want/need. In fact, you can install all of them and ‘only disable’ the ones you do not need right now. Activate a provider is easier than reinstalling it
