I’ve noticed that when I copy file (this case local copy of website - few thousand files) that avast is still scanning files 10 minutes or more later, and as a result it’s keeping the drive locked so I can’t remove it without disabling avast!
Which is your Standard Shield sensitivity level? High or Normal?
Which are the type (extension) of these files?
set to normal.
Files are html, php, css (various image, video and audio) few word docs and pdf.
If you disable WebShield, does the scanning stop?
Webshield terminated makes no difference. I can see the resident protection scanning through all the files that I copied.
Took nearly 10 minutes after the transfer completed to scan the files (and the drive is still locked).
Can you go to Standard Shield settings and disable the scanning of open/created/modified files and see what happens?
That does it. Seems avast was scanning absolutely everything?!
What? Stop scanning?
Yes, I’m able to remove the drive if the scan new files option is unchecked.
Of course, now it doesn’t scan anything.
No, it still scans executable files.
With WebShield, Network Shield and other providers, you’ll be covered.
Tried this again with 2 drives (portable hdd and 4gb Cruzer Titanium) took 6 minuites to transfer the data from the portable hdd to the Cruzer - with and without on access scanner.
But an extra 7 minutes - more actually, had to terminate the scanner - for avast! to finish scanning after the transfer .
So you say the only way is to terminate these options? -

I take it that will affect all scanning? Won’t it leave my system open to infection or are these options irrelevant in the first place?
I do upload and download a variety of files from clients etc by mail, ftp, http. Will that mean none of these get scanned either?
Or is the only option to terminate/pause the scanner so I can remove the drive(s)?
Cheers.
ps: the scanner was locking both drives btw - don’t know if I was clear.
I think avast scans while it’s being transfered and not after. Maybe I’m wrong.
All resident (on-access) scannings.
They’re not irrelevant, but your system will be still protected by the basic (the first tab of settings) settings of Standard Shield.
On opening/changing/modifing files, no, they won’t be scanned. But, WebShild will scan http, mail has it’s own provider, ftp could be scanned post factum by ashQuick.exe. There are ways to circumvent the problems.

Yeah, it started scanning when I started transferring byt continued well after, and as a result locked the drive. Not that big a deal on a flash drive, but a portable (esata) drive I use for work is write cached.
Then I have to disable the scanner or reboot to enable removal.
