Avast Secure Browser continually attempting to update but failing

(a quick note to say that I recognise that my problem is similar to others’ on this community page, however I have a slightly different problem which I need help with alongside the problem others have been having)

Whenever I open my computer and open Avast Secure Browser (I’m on the Windows version), it keeps telling me every time that it needs to update. When I try to update the browser, it leads me to download a new installer, but the progress bar of the installer gets stuck around 80% of the way through the installation, and stops completely. This is peculiar since I’ve also gone to the ‘about avast secure browser’ page in my settings, and on that page it says that my browser is completely up-to-date.

It’s rather annoying since all of my saved accounts and extensions also keep corrupting and failing whenever I try to use my browser now, and I physically can’t download the update.

Any advice would be massively appreciated <3

Hi, if you still have the actual browser installed, please do the following:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Go to Settings, About page
  3. Wait for the Browser to trigger the update (or just hit F5 / Refresh the page)
  4. Restart the browser after update is downloaded & installed

Hope this helps

Apologies, but as I said before, when I open the about page, it says that my browser is already fully updated. However the browser is still telling me that it needs an update and fails 80% of the way through said update.

Hi,

could you please go to Settings, About page, click on Diagnostic information, copy & paste it here?

Thank you.

Apologies, I would, but I’ve now uninstalled the browser.

I am having the same problem. The getting “stuck at 80%” appears to resolve itself … but it takes several minutes, despite the fact that Task Manager shows very low CPU usage. Eventually the browser starts … BUT it still shows the blue “UPDATE” oval in upper right corner. And if you click on it says “… out of date”. If you click on that message it pops up with a message “Avast Secure Browser couldn’t update to the lastest version, so you’re missing out on new features and security fixes.”

This issue has been around for a couple weeks or slightly more, after about 6 months of trouble free using it on my Win11 Pro.
Another note: When it gets stuck at 80% after installing TaskManager shows the installation process with a “32-bit” in the name of the process. My system is 64-bit.

I had also tried uninstalling it via the Win11 “Remove Programs” and it reports “Uninstalling Avast Secure Browser v131.0.027894.265…” … maybe that will help someone. My assumption is that was the last version I had been using before trying multiple times to download and re-install the browser.
Too bad … I really liked it :frowning:

UPDATE: I tried something to confirm what version was installed … I clicked on the three-vertical-dots icon and then “Help and About Avast Secure Browser”, and then “About Avast Secure Browser”. It IMMEDIATELY started “Checking for Updates” … and updated the browser !!!

I am now on “Version 132.0.28559.198 (Official Build) (64-bit)” as displayed in the “About …” section.

Another Update: I am configuring a new Mini PC with AMD Ryzen 5 7430U CPU and 32GB RAM. I “virgin” installed Avast Secure Browser. Same “stuck at 80%” symptom, while the CPU load was in the single % range and Memory usage around 34%. It was “stuck” for a full 5 minutes on this relatively speedy CPU. No idea what it was doing during these 5 minutes – I timed it. There were 10 background processes labelled “Avast Browser” using about 128MB during this time with only occasional disk and network access. Once “unstuck” the installation process swiftly completed.

Maybe someone should explain what this 5 minutes of “idle” activity is for.

Hi,

Could you please share the version of the installer you downloaded and executed? You can find it when right-clicking on the exe, go to Details tab and find the “File version”.

Thank you.
