Avast seems not to automatically update definitions

About 1,5 years ago I upgraded windows XP x86 to Windows 8 pro x86 on my eMachines EL1200 (clean install). I noticed avast does not automatically update the definitions version.

In the “settings”->“update” window “current version” keeps the same for weeks. Although “connection” says “connection made” and “received new update” also shows the current date/time.

If I choose to manually update, the definitions do get updated. The first time after a restart of the pc, the defintions do update automatically. Shutdown and startup does not evoke an update.

“Settings” says: “automatic update”. Streaming updates are enabled.
(I had to translate the avast interface from Dutch for this post, I hope I did right.)

Clean install of windows 8 pro x64 did not make a difference.
Update to windows 8.1 pro x64 did not make a difference.
Upgrade to windows 10 pro x64 (without keeping apps, files or settings) and re-install of windows 10 pro x64 (If remember well this was a clean install) did not make a difference.

On another pc of mine, a HP dc7900 usdt this problem also occured after an upgrade from windows vista x86 to windows 8 pro x64 (clean install). An update to windows 8.1 did not make a difference. An upgrade to windows 10 pro x64 did not either.
I noticed today that after leaving the the latter pc for an hour, it had updated the definitions version after about 50 minutes.

The problem occurs on WLAN connection as well as on LAN

On my other pc’s (windows 7 or XP) Avast automatically updates definitions on startup without any problem or delay.

Hope anyone has a clue why this happens and what I can do about it? A little inconvenient to have to manually update all the time.

Make sure any previous installed av is completely removed.

Perform a repair of avast.
If the repair doesn’t solve the problem, perform a clean installation of the latest avast version.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

If Repair doesn’t fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

Thanks for your reply.

I’m pretty sure I did a clean install of avast after the windows 10 upgrade’s on both systems but it’s a been a while. I’m using avast for years now so for certain there wasn’t any previous other brand av installed on both systems.

I followed your advice and did a repair of avast on both sytems. On both systems I got a popup: “Failed to load language dll language path: 1033\UILangRes.dll” after closing the repair.

I will monitor the situation now to see if there is any change. If there is no result I intend to remove avast, run the uninstall utilty and do a clean install as instructed.

Ok, keep us informed of any changes please.

I’m afraid the problem is not solved yet. At first it seemed encouraging. Yesterday I started up (not restart) both systems twice after I noticed my other win7 system had updated definitions. The both win10 systems updated their definitions version right after win 10 startup.

Today I noticed my win7 system had updated definitions so I started up both win10 systems. After a few minutes “settings->updates” said connection was made and the time for “new update received” changed to te the current time. “current version” kept outdated. I left both systems for a while. Every fifteen minutes “new update received” changed to the the current time. After approximately one hour “current version” finally changed to the most recent version.

I have uninstalled Avast on both systems now via “add/remove program”, after that I have run avastclear.exe and then reinstalled Avast. I’m waiting now for a new definitions version on my win7 system so I can check the response of the win10 systems.

I can confirmed this issue. After manually update avast! pop-up VIRUS DB IS OUT OF DATE.And avast! not automatically update the DB.Try to fixed issue:Repair option failed,Clean install failed.Avast! Dev should look at this and fixed it.

Strange, Windows 10 64 bit no problems with Avast updates:

Sorry to say the problem persists after the clean install of Avast on both win10 x64 systems.

Again the first two times the virus definitions version updated right away after starting up the systems.
Today when I saw my win7 system had a new definitions version I started up both win10 systems which did not update their defininitions version for at least two and a halve hours although they estabilished connection and say they received a latest update right away.

Weird. Any suggestions?

Stop worrying about it. VPS only consolidates what your streaming updates have already sent you.

Are you really sure about that? Am I safe? Before, when I first noticed this behaviour (ran win 8/8.1) I mostly didn’t use the pc’s very frequently and not longer than an hour. The definitions version then became weeks old. It just doesn’t feel right…

Do you recive stream updates?
Does avast give any error message? … if no, dont worry

Check the AvastUI > Tools > Statistics > Component status - Updates received in the last 24 hours. This is for the streaming updates.

Maybe this will help:

If this is working, your getting the latest protection and updates.

Well, I don’t get any error messages and I think I do get streaming updates. “Statistics” shows a reasonable amount of updates on both pc’s the other so I guess I’m alright?
