Avast Service (32 bit) on Windows 10 laptop uses 99% of CPU all the time.

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 10. I downloaded Avast Free as that is what I’ve always used and trusted. I just turned the laptop on and when I look at Task Manager it shows Avast Service (32 bit) is using 99% of the CPU. I turned the laptop on at 7pm and it is now 7:45pm and that percentage varies only between 96 and 99%. This is a 64 bit pc but I could not find a 64bit version of Avast.

I started to uninstall it and it asked if I wanted to repair it so I chose that option. It finished running and said it completed. The laptop rebooted but it is still using 99% of the CPU.

I should mention that right now that laptop is not connected to the internet. I don’t know if that would make a difference or not. I would think it should not as my old 64-bit Windows 7 laptop is running the same software and is not having any problems whether it is connected to the internet or not.

I guess I’ll uninstall Avast until I get a solution here. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Which version of Avast Free…?
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
