Avast slowing down/freezing computers in an unusable state

Hello

There’s been a program update recently. If you update it, it seems Avast freezes the computer to the point where it renders it unusable. CPU usage ramps up to 100%. The only common threads at this point is that they’re using Windows XP and ran the Avast program update within the past 3 days or so. Hopefully there will be a fix for this. So far I’ve seen 2 computers with this behavior.

Hi ,
I notice the same thing on an old computer (2004) running a AMD Sempron 3000+ processor without SSE2 …
(on two other machines with Intel P4 processor I don’t have this issue)
CPU grow to 100%, the only thing I can do is to shot down the pc :frowning:
I try to repair in safe mode than and reboot and all work fine ;
but the next day it happen again :frowning:

Hello. The problem has been discussed here: https://forum.avast.com/?topic=159243.0

It happens since the 2223 version. You should install instead the 2218 or 2215 one and don’t update it when it asks.

I thought of doing that but I’m thinking that it could be more of a module going wonky. That and if people allow the update to come through by mistake (since we should be updating, right?), it would bring me back to square one. Therefore I did a re-install and I’m trying different combinations until I have one that’s constantly CPU load friendly.

I did disable web shield but I also disabled remote assistance. I can confirm that this did help. Can anyone else confirm this? However I have no idea how long it will last for.

I did a fresh install after uninstalling completely with the uninstall tool;
I didn’t connect to my account and all seems to work now … ::slight_smile:
I don’t know if that is the workaround :-\

Same here, but with Vista 32: computer freezes while browsing with Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. Have to force hard boot. Rolled back to 2218 and problems vanished. It seems that 2233 and its predecessor are incompatible with Vista 32.

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15.0
