Avast slows down virtual machine extremely

Hi

I’m in big trouble with Avast free. I’m running it on Windows XP Prof. The problem is that it slows down extremely my virtual machine. I’m running VMware Server 1. If I’m disabling the real time protection(or how it’s called in english version, I’m german) then the virtual machine is running normal, but with the protection activated it’s real slow. I also detected that if I activate the real time protection AFTER I have startet the virtual machine then there’s no problem.

In the real protection settings I have excluded the following files.

*.vmdk
vmware-vmx.exe
…\My Virtual Machines*
C:\Programme\VMware*
C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\VMware*
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\VMware*
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Administrator\Anwendungsdaten\VMware*
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\mein Benutzerkonto\Anwendungsdaten\VMware*

So what can I do?

If you exclude everything in the File Shield, and it does not help, the solution might lie in one of Avast!'s other shields. I would try trusted processes in the Behavior Shield first.

Where is the settings for trusted processes? I only have the global settings and the file shield settings. I have Avast free.

Behavior shield → EXPERT settings → trusted processes.

Ist this also available in the free version?

You already have the Free edition, so why you need to ask?

Have you even tried and tested the suggestion?

Maybe hes still using 4.8 ???

I asked because I did not find this option. I have the newest version, but I also have german version.

From google translate:

Verhalten Schild -> EXPERT-Einstellungen -> vertrauenswürdige Prozesse

I have no idea the real names or exact translation in Avast, but anyway if you are writing and reading here in English, it shouldn’t be so difficult to get to the correct place, since you already know what you are looking for.

LOL, I just “love” Google translate…! ;D

ECHTZEIT-SCHUTZ → Verhaltens-Schutz → Erweiterte Einstellungen → Vertrauenswürdige Prozesse

Sure ;), but I was guessing was close enough for the user to understand the actual way to get there. (Well, I though that the English description was good enough too  . )

I don’t have this. See the screenshots.

Interesting…! Never have seen this before.
Which SP on XP…??

Is this a custom install, did you install only the File System Shield?

Seems like Behavior Shield is not even installed. But, if it is not installed at all, then it shouldn’t be the one making the executable to run so slow.

Which reminds me that script shield, which is installed according to the picture, depends on other shields, if I’m not mistaken.

You’re right, the script shield needs the behavior shield to run.

Yes this could be that I did not install the behaviour shield, but I’m not sure, I don’t know if I could unmark the behaviour shield at install, it’s a long time ago. I don’t need the script shield.

You can configure avast installation AND, after it is running, you can remove/uninstall any of its shields.

So the only thing I can do is to deactivate Avast, then starting the virtual machine and after that reactivate Avast. No other things works.

Is it possible to activate Avast only after some minutes after the pc starts? For example activate Avast after 10minutes after pc starts. Or is it possible to deactivate Avast or the shields for a planned period?

You know that avast has a built in help, right?

The shields can be paused from the tray icon.

For avast to be “delayed” on startup, it’s a little bit more complicated (it is not in the main GUI of avast), and there shouldn’t be any real need for that anyway. Simply pause the shields for 10 minutes from the tray icon and reactivate them when you want them again (also from the tray icon).
