I think that the software updater is a great idea, but I have one small problem with it. Yoy see, I have 3 pc’s that basically all have the same software (a few exceptions). When I run a smart scan, the software updater gets the updates and only updates the pc that this program is running on. I THINK that it would be nice to have the updater place the downloaded update in the browsers download folder so that the USER can place the same update on the other machines within the same network. Then, message the user that this has been done so THEY can update their other machines IF NECESSARY. In my (sole) opinion, this will prevent the updater from getting yet another needless copy of the same file, save the user time, and network resources. Please consider this.
Hi,
I didn’t know that Software updater was a stand-alone product.
That said, avast products are either “one device” or “multi-device”.
If you use Software updater with a “1 device” license, it’s normal that you can only use it on the device where it was installed, otherwise why would avast offer a multi-device product … more expensive?
If you have this type of license, you’ll need to install the product on each of the devices on your network whose updates you want to apply.
Chris, The version I use was included in my copy of Premium Security. I did not get a “stand alone” version. It shouldn’t matter how many devices I have Avast on. My point was to have the “updated” file be placed into a folder that could be more easily accessed. Right now, I don’t know where the updates are even going. Suppose I had to re-install the OS and other programs on my computer. Now, without having that file in my back-up, the Avast software updater has to get that file “all over again”. Did I help explain things better? Sorry for the confusion. I fully understand what their software has to do. 1. Get the current version of any questionable files from the mfg web. 2. Compare the installed version to the current. 3. If they do not match, inform the Avast user. 4. If the Avast user wants to update their program, then a) download the update. b) install the update My suggestion was to place the downloaded update file in the browsers download folder instead of some obscure or web folder so that the user can copy the file. Please forgive me, but I don’t see anything wrong with this.
One license = one update appropriate to the device.
As far as program updates are concerned, as you pointed out…
all have the same software (a few exceptions)
no two devices have exactly the same configuration.
And even if some programs are the same, they can be updated in a different way on their own.
On the other hand, program updates are a paid part of premium, why should avast provide a global update file that could be used elsewhere.
Either they’re banking on honesty (which is undoubtedly your case), but if they’re not, why should they provide a file (even a protected one) that can be used elsewhere, and which moreover isn’t certain to correspond exactly to the same profile?
Last but not least, I’m convinced that avast doesn’t download any files for program updates, but simply checks and then redirects to the software supplier’s update link.
I doubt that avast downloads updates for dozens of programs (which can be several gigabytes in size) somewhere on your hard disk (“obscure folder”, as you put it)…it simply acts as an interface between each update, downloading each file into a temporary folder until the update is complete… then the file is deleted.
Third-party program updates are different from virus updates (vps update), so it seems to me that this file is still available as a standalone download and can be used on other devices running avast antivirus (free and paid).
Look, I am NOT talking about the AVAST software being updated. Then, my copy of AVAST has the ability to allow 10 pc’s my license. It doesn’t matter what (TF) number of copies of Avast I purchase for UPDATES TO OTHER PROGRAMS I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED. If you are strongly telling me that they (you) are not going to EVEN consider this, THEN I RECANT MY VERY NICE REVIEW OF AVAST - GIVE SOME A BREAK TRYING TO HELP AND MAKE THINGS BETTER - FOR EVEN YOU! I NOW DON’T CARE IF I GET BANNED FROM THIS SITE AND MY MY 10 LICENSES GET REVOKED. I WILL THEN GET MY HARD EARNED MONEY BACK! I JUST GAVE THESE PEOPLE $100 OF MY MONEY - SO I THINK I HAVE A SMALL SAY IN TRYING TO HELP.
Me neither!!!
I’m talking about third-party software updates, via Software updater. (isn’t it?)
How can you obtain a file that doesn’t exist? Software updater simply launches the online procedure for updating directly from the suppliers of each third-party software.
Finally, in view of your irritation, I would like to remind you that this is a forum for users like yourself and that this is not avast customer service.
For that and for any complaints, please contact the official service
You SURE talked like “you know everything” and were pretty much squelching
even the idea of trying to help. You didn’t even know I PAID for the ability to put Avast on 10 computers BEFORE you made your defying claims. Again, AVAST, I TAKE BACK MY NICE REVIEW OF THIS SOFTWARE. These “super users” have a terrible way of judging before they know all of the facts and should not have anything to do with “trying to help”. May I please suggest that you take this site down because the “help” you get here is worthless.

Hi user55, please cease these strong and offensive words, or admins may take further actions.
Go ahe4ad and delete my account, heck even revoke my Avast licensing. I will demand the 99.95 I just paid to them for another year. You see, I feel that I did not start this. I was blindsided by some one who only cared about them selves. This person did not even ask me “if” I had paid for the licensing to do “what I was only suggesting” Then - even for their benefit! I felt “cut up and dismembered” by his rude and obnoxious comments that were totally unnecessary. What are you planning to do to him - nothing. It is because I got mad and stood up for myself that you now hate me. So, go ahead and DELETE this account. I had to revert to a backup of my password to even login and respond. If Avast even cares about its customers, they are loosing more than 1 next year - what a damn shame. Too bad!!!
To set the record straight, I know you had a multi-device license as soon as you said in your 2nd post:
It shouldn’t matter how many devices I have Avast on
hence my quote:
Either they’re banking on honesty (which is undoubtedly your case)
since I knew you had a multi-device license
But that wasn’t the problem
The problem is that avast doesn’t need to know whether the user using an unencrypted update file is doing so legally or not.
I’ve never talked down to you, I’ve never been rude here or elsewhere on the forum … it’s all down to your feelings.
But if you want to make yourself out to be a victim, go ahead… I’ll be on my way.
