Avast started to suck

So, I was a user of Avast until about a year ago when I switched to MSE purely for the lower CPU/Memory usage. Anyway, I was fixing a friends laptop which had lots of malware on it and I decided I would install Avast for her so it blocks any other infections. I did this because Avast used to be convenient, have low cpu usage and was not bloatware.

I installed the new version and Dear Lord. It almost qualifies as Malware in itself. What a pile of garbage! It didn’t even detect the malware and I had to install MalwareBytes to fix that. Considering Avast is now marketing itself as an all-in-one bloat-o-matic, I would at least expect it to remove malware. WRONG!

And to top it all off, all I get is messages every 2 minutes asking me to update to Pro or other annoying adverts for Avast products which you cannot disable.

And, yes, I did do a custom install.

I just wanted to make a thread about how disappointed I am. I have better things to do with my time than spending hours researching how to configure Avast so it does its job, which should be to quietly and efficiently work in the background, warning me about threats when they occur. It demands so much attention. I’m being constantly harassed and perpetually nagged. It reminds me of living at home with my Mother. Who would want that??

I really hope you change your philosophy, Avast team. I will not be using this bloatware again, I will not be recommending, and I will not be encouraging people not to use it.

Good luck in the future, because I think you’re gonna need it!

First, no security program have 100% detection.... Second,.....i guess it was a PUP detection?.... PUP = not virus / Possible Unwanted Program ....... crapware that follow with freeware downloads avast PUP detection is default off, so if you want pup detection, turn it on

Avast has increased the aggressiveness of their marketing, to the point where the product does indeed resemble some of the potentially unwanted programs we are trying to block with it.

There is a kernel of good value in it that can be employed if you don’t act on your first knee-jerk reaction, but instead take the time to learn a bit more.

It does require that you take an active role in installing it and configuring it, rather than just pressing the biggest, shiniest buttons, but if you do this you can enjoy a very good level of protection without pop-up ads and other fluff. Take it from those of us doing it.

Start by reviewing the fluffware in the central column in the installer, and note especially that installing it can be avoided (and it can be uninstalled via a Change operation). Know that the three shields are all you need to institute an awesome level of protection.
