Avast stops file copies and new MS patches for XP against Spectre and Meltdown

I rather think it will be a very long wait, given that MS no longer supports XP SP3, there is no fix on WU for XP as far as I’m aware. That may be different if you have the XP POS hack to continue updates, but if you had I don’t know if avast would be creating the compatibility registry key.

There is no HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat key in my XP registry. There is on my win10 registry and both systems are running avast free 17.9.2322.

I think that the dual question of the topic title isn’t helping as far as clarity goes they are so completely different.

I dreamed about it, avast did it ;D

I had the problem, too on my main machine and went back to a earlier version of Avast Free (see my signature) and after that, I don’t have any problem.

DavidR - I do have the registry key on my XP machine. But I am waiting for Avast’s micro-fix on the copy-file problem before I try to run ANY recent updates.

Agree that I started with the Meltdown and Spectre update problem, but it quickly became clear that such problem derives from the copy-file issue caused by Avast, which is bad in itself.

They go together like peanut butter and jelly, when the bread falls jelly side down.

Hello

A key question here is: if one CPU is not affected by Meltdown or Specter and no MS patches are installed, will Avast find it out and update the antivirus engine accordingly?

Regards

So much for the wisdom of updating Avast. Avast free 17.7.2314 has no issues with Windows XP SP3 (fully updated with XP and XP embedded security updates) on a Pentium 4 1.6GHz dating from about 15 years ago. The two MS updates KB4056615 and KB4056941 installed and now work faultlessly and with no perceivable performance hit.

On my XP machine, Avast has micro-updated to 17.9.3761.278 (from 17.9.3761.0). I was able to copy a test file successfully.

However, while I had the bad Avast, I installed Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978), and I suspect it was not a complete installation. So maybe I should now UNinstall this KB4052978 and REinstall it. How do I UNinstall KB4052978? And, specifically, how do I UNinstall it so that the XP machine will let me REinstall it?

Special thanks to Alikhan and Asyn … and Cosmics … et à chris05 pour son soutien moral!

Can not be take your case for a generality.
I have avast 17.9.2322 installed on my xp and I received without problem these 2 KB, look higher, my message of January 6th at 23:33
We must look for the answer elsewhere than just on the avast version
Yes , something related to avast but not only.

@glnz : thanks :wink:
I have Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978) by auto update december 13th , and if i wanted to delete it, i could with revo uninstaller, it is displayed there

chris05 - with the new micro-update, I was able to install ALL pending updates for XP.

Si vous n’êtes pas déjà familier, le fil de msfn (pour lequel j’ai ajouté un lien ci-dessus) est très utile pour garder votre XP actuel, en utilisant l’astuce POS.
