AVAST System Tray Icon Disappeared

My system tray icon has disappeared.

I went into the settings/appearance section of the program, and it was checked. I unchecked it, ran the program; rebooted the PC. I went back into settings/appearance checked show item and animation in system tray, ran the program and rebooted and still no icon.

It disappeared after running ComboFix and HiJackThis for TheSpykiller site that is helping me with some PC issues. Is this fixable or is it just as easy to re-download AVAST?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that didn’t work - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

It may as you said have been as a result of the Combofix (though I doubt that, check its quarantine, logs etc.) or the HiJackThis, if you fixed the entry for ashDisp.exe (if so HJT should have a back-up of the change that you can restore).

Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder (assuming the file still exists).

Or Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (see c:\avast-startup.reg if help needed)

Are you running XP? Do other icons not show up, or just Avast? If you log off, then log back on, does the icon appear? This is a symptom of XP that MS isn’t sure why it happens. However, there is a solution that can be found at http://winhlp.com/node/16.
I had the same problem after I installed Comodo 3 and I did the fix and now all icons load properly.

I am running Windows XP SP3

I have Comodo Firewall, but not 3; SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D.

It disappeared after ComboFix rebooted my PC…

Thanks. I’ll get back you.

Moderator whose helping me wants a log of my latest AVAST scan…I am not sure how to send/save a log of a scan. Help file in the program didn’t explain, at least not that I could find. Thanks.

I can’t see any request for a copy of a log in the forum topics you have posted to.

I’m not sure how a log of your latest avast scan would help in resolving any problem with missing avast icon. So I’m a little confused as to who asked for it and why unless you are experiencing other problems ?

I assume that adaware is the freeware version, if so that doesn’t present a problem.
Spybot S&D has a resident protection (TeaTimer), check in that and see if the ashDisp.exe is blocked. If so enable/restore it.

Did you try the avast repair that I suggested earlier ?

A copy of the log from my latest scan has nothing to do with the disappearing icon. I am very sorry for the confusion I may have caused.

TheSpykiller site had asked me to run a scan of my system and send along a copy of the results. I found the report menu and have solved that question.

I’ll tackle the disappearing icon once I get the results of my scan off to the person that wants it for analysis.

The forum here is terrific; thanks again.

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)

The repair procedure worked like a charm! :-*

Thanks alot!!!
