Hello all. I just installed Avast and everything went well until I tried to send email. My client is Tbird version 1.5.0.7 (20060909). My firewall is Zone Alarm 7.0.470.000 and I did shut off the part of ZoneAlarm the installation prompt suggested. I also double checked and Avast email checker has full permissions on Zone Alarm
First of all, it’s not possible to scan because Gmail uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections. Avast mail scanner doesn’t support SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections. But take a look here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=10428.0 to see how to set up secure email with avast!.
Since SSL/TLS e-mail is encrypted and decrypted in the client, external virus scanners (including avast!) can’t read or scan it.
The solution is to pass e-mail in and out un-encrypted from your client (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, …) to a proxy program (Stunnel) that does the actual ssl or tls encryption/decryption of the pop3/smtp e-mail and communicates directly with the ISP server on the appropriate ports. Download here: http://www.stunnel.org/download/binaries.html
If you do want your Googlemail/Gmail received by Thunderbird and scanned then there is another alternative to STunnel. You can use the Thunderbird Webmail extensions to retrieve your GMail for you - with the Thunderbird GMail extension and unchecking the ‘Ignore local communication’ in the Redirect tab of settings of avast Internet Mail provider you can receive and send GMail and have it scanned by avast as a regular POP account.
