Avast ultimate

I bought Ultimate last night and thought I’d try out the VPN before I left the UK so that I’d be confident I’d have access to UK TV channels. I selected the allegedly best UK address for streaming then selected a TV app to watch…it wouldn’t open because it told me I wasn’t in the UK even though I’m at a London address. I then tried the supposed 24/7 customer service number…which never answers. Not the best of starts. So glad there’s a 30 trial period. Should have known the price was too good to be true.

As your in the UK i would pick another country. usually its a good idea to pick USA then if you have netflix or prime go to the app to see if it shows films that are not available in the uk.
I only tried their vpn for a day but it dropped my speed by three quaters every time. I now use Nord and it doesnt affect speed at all.

ps. thinking about it i usually connect to uk but when i tried a speed checker it said i was in the netherlands even though i was connected to a uk vpn server.

I think that this is the BBC at work as they control things in regard to only License payers having access to content.

“even though I’m at a London address.” - Your VPN connection may not be.

It would appear that the BBC has a means of detecting VPNs and not just Avast - this may be commonly known IPs that serve VPN services. Or the volume of traffic through that IP address may indicate a high volume of traffic (traffic shaping) which could well be a VPN and they block that IP.

I suspect that this would impact other VPNs if the IP isn’t a UK assigned one or the traffic is of a high volume.

Wasn’t just the BBC it was ITV as well. The IP I’d selected was the UK one that’s allegedly for streaming, but then that doesn’t appear to be the case…

The BBC was just an example, it happens to be very good at blocking VPNs and not just Avast.

Even if it was a UK IP address the traffic throughput could indicate it is a VPN.

Yet the upgraded version of the browser appears to virtually guarantee that it’ll work but then that’s offered for sale at as yet another upgrade  Don’t think I’ll chance that one.

I honestly don’t think the browser would be a factor even when using a VPN, if it is the VPN being blocked rather than the browser.

Yes the browser is how you view the site, but how the connection/routing is made is down to the VPN.

But there is no mention of ‘the browser’ by the original poster, nor is there an indication of what Browser being used.

Please stay on topic.

I’m the original poster. My point is that the package I paid for has a none operating VPN. Avast offer a paid for browser that has within it a VPN which they claim will access all TV stations worldwide. So it is the same subject.

My apologies, it wasn’t clear that the browser was an integral part of the VPN.

It’s just confusing which product that has VPN is the most effective. As you see by the screenshot they make a claim for the integrated VPN in the browser but was wondering if any members of the forum have tried it out…I could cancel the Ultimate package and buy the browser but be in the same position.

As an Avast User I have no input on that. I have been using Avast Antivirus Free for over 20 years, so I haven’t experienced this problem.

I’m not sure that the Browser can be purchased separately like this and get the full benefits of the full VPN product.

I have the Ultimate package and everything, including the VPN, is working well for me.
My subscription ends in January and I’ll be renewing it.

Welcome back to the new forums

Thanks for your confirmation.

When you say “working for you” are you able to watch the BBC and ITV content on their apps?

I live in Australia, and don’t watch them.
But I have customised my settings to meet my needs.
Also, the VPN masks your location; maybe, consider changing the location to one in another region of the UK.
I set mine to another state in Australia when necessary.
I am by no means an expert, just a thought.

I have the same problem, i pay for the Avast Premium package. It includes Avast’s premium vpn, that claims that the user will have access to tv channels around the world. Im in the US, New Jersey, and the BBC blocks me even though i pick a london vpn connection in Avasts vpn. Idk, but about a year or 2 ago the customer service became non existent. Go to the forum n good luck, i guess it has something to do with the rulng against them for privacy violations or ? The customer service used to excellent! I’ve been a customer for many years and know how good the product n service was, shame. The vpn claims about being able to connect to tv service is false, whether the BBC has found a way to detect it or not. Avast should either update the vpn or amend the claims or add a disclaimer.

Very true,it makes that claim on three of its products. On Ultimate they even list a UK Wonderland option that is the best for streaming…
